The New York Islanders Scored a Critical Win Over the Detroit Red Wings to Keep Their Hopes Alive

The New York Islanders showed resilience in their 5-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings which helped keep their playoff hopes alive.

Brock Nelson scored twice and Pierre Engvall got the team’s first empty net goal of the season in the win. We break down what the team did better in this game and some of the things they still need to clean up but at this point, Patrick Roy and the coaching staff can’t care too much about style points.

We also preview Saturday’s home game against the Boston Bruins which is another challenging game for the Isles.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. Fkn Isles so nite and day. How dare isles beat playoff caliber teams back x back in stars, wings on road and hurt their draft status? In a game both teams had 24 shots sorokin makes one more save than lyon is the difference. Wings were hot with 6 straight wins coming in. Scored 17 goals last three games yet are still jittery on back end. Isles took advantage of that to pull out W. 29 two g, 13 lead the way. Even useless as fk 18 chipped in the garbage e n goal to pad his goal total to a whopping 7 goals. And 29 is hot-27 goals now. Good trade bait time louzer. btw one hypothetical trade has la bringing toffoli back from nj for kaliev, prospect, 3rd. What would 29 bring back in same scenario with say la? kaliev, prospect, and a first? la is loaded with prospects. wake the fk up louzer. Now is the time to move 29 with one week to go in tdl time. Louzer must be dreaming of trading another first away about now. zzzzz…… A win over b's on sat. could do it. And philly is the vunerable team in east playoff spot. Gotta get ahead of flyers, nj, pens to do it.

  2. If I had to guess I would say Lou trades Semyon V because allows him to keep his core intact and perhaps moving Oliver W for Duclair

  3. That was one of the most impressive wins all year gotta come home and play like that and maybe they have shot to sneak in! But still don’t want to trade for anyone

  4. Ha ha like the Tampa Bay Game the islanders proved they can take down any team all the players together for 60 minutes and the outcome is a Win LGI ! Great show spot on thank you Gil 👍🏼

  5. Good 🌄, Gil, how are you? Although it wasn't pretty, THE Islanders managed to put out some 🔥 in Detroit last night. Now can they play another 60 Minutes of solid 🏒? Nice going, Brock, and Cze. The power play was good, and the penalty was good, too, good for them for staying out of the box. They were the three C's CALM, COOL, AND COLLECTED. It's about ⌚ they got off an empty netter. You're right they're human, and they're gonna make mistakes, but they can learn from them. They seemed like they sputtered in the 3rd period. They've got Boston at 🏡 tomorrow. Do they still act like The Big Bruins from the 60's, and 70's? If so, The Islanders need to get on their guard, especially after The Bruins beat the reigning Stanley Cup Champion VGK. HAPPY 🎂, MIKKO MAKELA. Hear from you on Monday. LET'S GO ISLANDERS.

  6. Give up Nelson for Kaliev? Prospects involved would be good , but Kaliyev has less points than Nelson’s goals. He only has 14 points. Not an option.

  7. Great win but I'm hoping this doesn't cause Lou to buy at the deadline. The Isles need to get rid of some of these expiring contracts and older players. Keep the core, Barzy, Horvat, Dobson, Nelson (Unless they can get a haul) Romonov, Pelech and Pulock.

  8. Hi everybody am I supposed to be happy that Islanders win ? We know that we going nowhere trade whatever you can now otherwise will be to late……LGI

  9. Good morning team. Gil, doing really great here. How are you, Sir? Redwings go down to the Islanders, in front of their own fans. Yes, the Isles did let them back in the game, and it was touch and go for a few moments, but I'm so glad we didn't give up and PP goals. The couple of penalties we took, our PK played well enough to give their PP units a donut! That's a start. I won't call it a win streak yet, but that's two in a row, against pretty good teams. Fingers crossed we have a little surprise for Boston as well. I want to wish everyone a great weekend! Enjoy the game tomorrow. See you on Monday. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!!

  10. Nice game. Everyone was skating and battling. Roy must be sneaking a testosterone supplement into Engvall' lunch, because he was more aggressive and physical than I've ever seen. He actually threw a check in the D-zone that wasn't of the 'sorry, excuse me' bump variety. He caused a turnover that resulted in a rush into the O-zone.
8 goals in the last 2 games against the Stars and wings. Is it possible that Roy's crazy line combinations are the secret formula that gets this team scoring? Too early to tell, but that was a puzzle Trotz and Lambert never solved.

  11. Hi Gil!! Been watching games but traveling on business lately. Let’s see—-win 3 more and you’ll my attention again. Where was this decent effort all season? Some crap moments but not bad. Trade Nelson? Give me back to back number 1’s and he helps you win a Cup. Trade Whally, Jg all the same. Won’t happen but I’d do it. Matty and clutter are done—-
