How many years is left on the contract?

Gotta imagine that drops the price too

  2. If no salary retained it better just be for picks or b tier prospects

Markstrom is 34 years old, he will likely regress severely in the next 1-2 years.

It would frankly be idiotic to get him. I’m shocked Fitz is even considering this.

  4. I think Toffoli signs which makes Holtz movable. Maybe even Mercer but not both.

Why why why ??? Jeezus freakin Christmas…. Don’t do it, Fitzy

  6. If they’re willing to take Vitek in return, I’m all for it. The guy is playing well and it’s only two years. Kind of an ideal stopgap goalie honestly. His contract buys us two years worth of reliable goaltending after which we can assess the situation again, either one of our own has blossomed enough to be able to take over, or we look for another solution. I get that people would preferably get someone like Saros, but we haven’t had a strong goaltender since Cory in 16-17, so Markström would be a breath of fresh air.

Makes sense in terms of bargaining dynamic. Fitz probably doesn’t want to move the pieces it would require to get him here at 3 million AAV. He’s also probably reading the tea leaves and seeing that there aren’t many goalies and he needs a goalie whether it’s this year or next year.

Markstrom is a potential regression risk due to age at 6 million or 3 million so it doesn’t really bother me as much as some of the other people on that. It’s not bobrovsky money and he’s a good goalie.

That said, I also think Elvis could be the both the biggest gamble and biggest reclamation project in recent history. He’s been a subpar performer but an elite talent aside from some issues he has when it comes to his depth and overcommitting when he pushes out of the RVH. Vitek has depth issues too but he doesn’t have the hip line/mobility or athleticism to make dead to rights saves even if he knows where he needs to get. Elvis is able to make saves that vitek physically isn’t capable of making and he has the ability to track pucks that vitek does not have. He would undoubtably need to come at close to 3 million with vitek going back though. In that instance we would then we would at least be in relatively the same position today only we have a guy that can occasionally bail the devils out of their brutal mistakes and potentially be a top tier guy if he manages to get his game back together outside of Columbus.

  8. Brodeur was asked top 5 goalies currently and listed Markstrom in there. Management obviously are very high on him.

Y’all don’t want him?? Guy is playing elite this year and some of the best hockey of his career and can make us a legitimate Cup contender for the rest of his deal. He’s in his mid 30’s but he has under 500 games played for his career so he’s not going to fall off a cliff just because he hit a number in age. He has the best high danger save percentage in the league right now. It would be a good deal for this team regardless if we gave up Holtz or not, for crying out loud Holtz is the 5th-6th best winger on this team at best he’s an extra goal scorer who’s the odd man out and can’t play defense a lick, and we have Gritsyuk waiting in the wings too. This team can be 4 points out with 2 games at hand after tonight we can get an actual veteran goaltender who’s capable of carrying us and giving us a real chance to win the 2 years in the near future ,and you don’t want us to go after him? Like goalies just grow on trees? Give me a damn break. Its not like getting him would stop us from developing Daws if we think he’s our future #1

everyone forgets markstrom horrible performance in the playoffs vs the oilers? that was his vezina year. he was scapegoated that year and the year that followed.

  11. PeppiPanini

I guess I’m in the minority. I would gladly welcome this move. The age aversion is really being overblown for a two year commitment here imho. Saros isn’t available rn, and will still cost a huge sum in the summer. I’m not exactly in the mood for NJ to commit major assets and cap space to Saros when Nashville burned us on a declining PK Subban not that long ago to be frank. Marky would still be an upgrade over all three of our guys, and would allow the time needed for Daws/Schmid to develop more in the 1B for ~25 games a year.

DO IT. It’s just as much a solution next season as it is now

For everyone pleading no, thinking it would be a dumb move for Fitz, what alternative do you propose?

Have you looked how shitty the pending RFA’s and UFA’s are for the next two years?

There are three possible guys up to Markstroms caliber and two of the three will likely either resign with their team or have their rights traded before hitting the open market.  It will be very competitive and expensive to sign one of these guys on the open market and if we don’t; then Fitz is two years down the line with dick in hand trying to figure out our goaltending.

  14. I think it’s crazy how people are against this. No single addition would make this team stronger.

  15. pretzelogically

Get it done Fitz. I still think the Flyers are gonna drop out and a trade like this would give such a big confidence boost to the team that we’ll see them loosen up some and start to play better. Can’t have these guys always thinking every mistake they make is gonna be in the back of the net. Just get into the playoffs and be hot when you do and roll the dice.

  16. I don’t understand being this desperate for a 34 year old goalie who will probably last a year here at best

  17. cody-has93

Idc if we move holtz if we never intend on giving him a bigger role.

If we dont use him better then others can fill his slot servicably.

  18. Gambler_Eight

Is there no one else we can go for? Id rather not we trade for markström. Especially not if someone like holtz goes the other way.

  19. goatgosselin

This doesn’t seem like it should be done anymore.

  20. JackfruitProper

I got a bad feeling about this. Do the devs want to give up a lot for a 34 year old goaltender??
