Happy Friday everybody! Welcome to The Notebook, a twice-per-week look at the most interesting rumours and notes from around the NHL with Oilersnation writers Cam Lewis and Zach Laing.
In today’s episode, we looked at the two trades that were made this week, as the Calgary Flames dealt Chris Tanev to the Dallas Stars and the Toronto Maple Leafs responded by adding Ilya Lyubshkin. We discussed whether the Flames jumped too quickly trading players away this season and whether they would have been better off making a deal with the Edmonton Oilers instead.

Better Flames = better rivalry. Go Oilers
I feel great about the deal. Expiring contract for a 2nd and prospect.
If this was the move then that obviously means it was the best move available
Reason why Tanev never went to the Leafs???… Nylander and Marner would have been freaked out when he smiled. Can't have that.
Conroy still has to trade a major piece in Hanifin, why is it a bad thing that he traded the other UFAs well before the deadline so he could focus on getting a good return for Hanifin, rather than being rushed near the deadline and making rash trades for everyone?
Also just because Seravalli tweets Conroy would like a 1st for Tanev, and because the return was a little different, doesnt mean its a poor trade. There was a lot more to the trade than youre discussing.
Poor commentary here based on Twitter speculation and not much fundamental analysis.
Tanev had Oilers on his no trade list and didn't want to waive it.
