Hello, welcome back! I hopped on my Marin Nicasio Ridge gravel bike to see how different it feels to my carbon frame. Unfortunately the ride was cut short due to smashing my rear mech on an angry rock. Luckily I managed to limp home and still had an enjoyable day out. Do you prefer steel, carbon, aluminium or titanium?

Well at least that rain might help wash off some of that mud before you get home.
I think you need an MTB for that puddle. I saw a video of a woman who rode that same puddle a day or two ago, but she used a mountain bike to clear it.
Steel is real. 🙂
Nice! I rock the Nicasio Ridge, great stuff! What’s your gearing on this guy?
Over here witha an aluminium frame, carbon fork 😅
I got a Ritchey Outback (steel frame, carbon fork) last week and I love it. By far the best bike I have ever been on.
Lot to be said for steel bikes! If you're pro or can afford to replace it if something happens… carbon. If you're a privateer or want something to last forever, steel is real.
I have a Yo Eddy MTB made in the USA circa 1997. I t's steel and beautiful and I use it for everything. Even if I could afford another bike I wouldn't buy one because one quality steel bike is enough. For me? Steel every time. Those trails look really nice and must be great to ride in the Spring and Summer. Late Winter and early Spring (like your video) also seems nice but unfortunately your steed will require a bit of a wash afterwards. Nice post.
Workman blames tools, workman breaks tools, manufacturer sends him new tools.
As popular steel frame folklore would have you believe, you could have stopped at the nearest farm/garage and have them bend/weld everything back in to shape. 🙂
So it was going into all the right gears but in the wrong order !!!!!
I refuse to ride carbon as it can't be recycled and just ends up in landfill. Higher environmental cost of manufacture too I believe.
Steel gravel frame with 42s is a blast for bombing around city streets. If I had any option, titanium frame.
Cool video! I just own one bike.. a MTB. 650b, steel frame and no suspension… Because you can have fun at 5mph 😀
Is that a Nicasio 2?
how about a titanium frame?
You know you have to have a pressed headset and a metal fork to be hipster certified.
New subscriber! Have to wonder if it is the gearing and tyres that slow the steel machine down. You did notice when "single-speeding" at the end how much harder gears make it. The weight difference is not likely to matter. Think how much more difference losing a stone in body weight makes! PS. not saying you need to ha! Enjoyed the vid, nice local trails you have there and nice bikes!
The only carbon I got is my fishing rods I would not trust a carbon bike I want metal lol
I adore my Ti frame and carbon wheels. Perfect for Cornish roads!
Brompton?
You mention that Carbon wheels absolutely changes the ride on a steel frame. Can you elaborate please? I’ve got a steel frame and often wondered about carbon wheels, cheers!
I wish I kept my 1990 kona explosif
Oh no… ENGAUGE LIMP MODE… I dropped my bike on Saturday, slightly bent the mech hanger… got it straight again, all is sweetness and light!
You didn’t break your steel bike…you broke the derailleur hanger. Can you say CLICKBAIT?
You Rock man. Ride on.
One day I will splurge and get myself a custom titanium frame with a steel fork. In the meantime I will continue to enjoy my all steel bike FULLY equipped with a threaded stem and rim brakes.
Will you tell us what custom you going for?
Aw Dave, I love your videos! Proper riding and proper filth! I’m a pretty novice gravel biker and I’m just shit scared riding in mud! I hate losing my wheels! I need help! Technique video on how to ride on slippy mud?!
Wicked Sexy bike 💯🇺🇸👍
No spare hanger?
What glasses are those ?
Provided all specs are same, which is the most comfortable to ride? Steel? Alu? Or carbon?
I just bought a custom steel gravel bike. It wasn't that expensive because I live in Colombia and high-level craftsmanship isn't that costly. I highly recommend getting one from either Duarte, Tinno or Scarab. You can get them abroad too or have them shipped to you. Mighty impressive stuff.
Steel frame 🤟
I’ve just ordered a custom Steel British Gravel frame from a small company called Gritspoke. I don’t race and have a carbon aero road bike and an MTB. Steel is great for a gravel bike I think and can’t wait.
Your energy and style reminds me of the character in the Fast Show that always says brilliant 😂
Keep up the good work and the rides they are brilliant!!
I have 2 spare mech hangers. One lives in my saddlebag, one lives in my bitbox at home. Might be worth taking one with you, though it would be a bit tricky if you have lots of different bikes and use the same saddlebag/tool bottle for all of them.
I have switch back from my 7.8 kg 58 cm L cervelo Aspero to my 9.2 kg steel All City Macho King xl 60 cm (very light 1x setup and dt swiss carbon wheelset) cause i love the ride quality of steel in cross terrain and in my case it is faster too …
You talk too much nonsense
Of course they do. That’s why they cost like a fkn bike mate almost.
I’m actually considering getting carbon wheels later on. To feel the experience. Some good after market companies now.
That road is definitely not for gravel unless you have a lot of money to replace shit.
Love a steel frame. Looking are Fairlight or standert
