The Red Wings should extend Patrick Kane, but what about David Perron?

Patrick Kane has 28 points in 27 games. He has proven himself as a bonafide commodity for this team. So when Emily Kaplan reported there were talks of an extension, it was an easy ‘yes please’ from Wings fans. But he isn’t the only player talking with managment. David Perron is also in the talks for an extension, and our thoughts on that are a bit more…varied. Also, the Red Wings are shopping a defenseman? Previewing the Capitals. #LGRW

  1. The only way you can see age affecting a player is their speed, and Perron is not any slower this year than he was last year. He played all 82 games last season, right? He'll have at least 6 less this season due to the suspension. He's also not been in the top 6 as much. If he gets close to 50 points, I don't call that a regression.

  2. I appreciate that you have to talk about something every day but this is the absolute worse time to talk about renegotiating Kane's contract. Other that Bedard taking a run at him Sunday, most opponents have not taken the body on Kane. Now that we look like a playoff team it's time to talk about playoff hockey. How long will take for Tkachuk and company to line up the diminutive Kane, standing still dangling the puck. Welcome to the playoffs. How durable is Kane in the playoffs? After that question is answered then you can discuss next years contract.

  3. I think beating the "we have kids in the system" drum is an interesting choice. It's clear we're over-ripening our prospects. As ready as we might think Mazur or Hanas is for the big show, I'm sure the front office wants to see more from them. Berggren could easily slot in, but he and Edvinsson are pretty much carrying the Griffins right now and will help give that team some truly valuable experience if they make the playoffs.

On Perron or other older guys, it all starts with what the organization wants to do with our younger players. How many of them, if any, will be promoted next season? Can any of them do the same job as Perron? Same for Kane. Do we have any point-per-game players in GR who are also capable of driving play and being good defensively only by virtue of always having the puck? I don't know if we have any kids who can replace either of these guys and what they bring every night.

  4. Perron 100% no…too slow and we have several young players that need to develop in the NHL. Gives me Holland flashbacks having all these mediocre veterans hanging around

  5. I made the comment yesterday that initially you both thought it was a bad idea to sign Kane when it first came up. This wasn't a "told you so" comment. I'm really wondering that what has changed since that time to make you want him to stay now? Is it because how you initially thought he wouldn't fare well after the surgery? Can you compare the hesitation at first to the acceptance now?

As for DP, as much as I love him and I truly believe he is great for this team, I think there are enough leaders in the locker room that we don't "need" him any longer. Lock down Kane, Seider, and Raymond first and bring up some of those prospects and get them going while you have examples like Kane there to teach them. Sprong needs to stay before DP. DP will easily land somewhere else no problem. Not that keeping DP is a bad idea. These are good problems to have.

  6. The wings do NOT have a defense core…they have a solid top pair and a bunch of aging overpaid expendables. Stevie will fix it, but seems this is his one blind spot as his signings have not been successful in this area thus far

  7. im in for moving Perron. he'd be a rental to whoever wants him unless they extend. he does have a m-ntc. also in his place bring up Johnny Burgers, and of course get him signed.

  8. Kane shouldn't accept lower than 6mil. 4.5 would be laughable Scott and in no way plausible. Even at 6mil for 2-3 years, I'd want him signed.

  9. Perron should be given away at trade deadline if anybody will just take him for his salary. Couple of good choices in GR that would be better.

  10. Kaner could decide to go to Buffalo or the Hawks. From Buffalo, and Chicago will give him an after hockey opportunity. Red Wings won't have a lot of cap space next season. Will need youth with soft salary cap hits.

  11. Got to believe that the Wings are looking to dump Copp, eating a bunch of his salary for 3 more years, or, if no takers, buy him out. Has to be the worst signing in Yzermans career as a GM.

  12. FUN FACT: Our top 11 forwards have 10 or more goals with Walman sprinkled in there. 2 players are over 20 and 4 are 6 or less away from 20. How cool would it be to have 6 players score 20+ this season?

  13. I love Perron and the presence he brings, I just feel that it wouldn’t be wise to resign him at his age when his game has been declining, especially in the context of having so many prospects needing to work their way into our lineup and having other veterans to provide what he does now. If Kane doesn’t resign, bring him back. If Sprong doesn’t resign, maybe bring him back, but if either or both do at reasonable prices I don’t see the need
