No way I’m trading anything significant when the guy is still on the injured list and is a 20 game rental. You better have an extension in place before making a move like that. Could probably land Henrique and Vatrano for less than the price of Guentzel. At least Vatrano has another year left on his deal.

Vegas has assets to burn and a Cup to defend. I think they outbid anything the Canes would offer for a rental. Dreger followed up saying it is a rental-only at this point.
The upside is there is one less team in the mix for other forwards. I would love to see Buchnevich getting surprise scratched tonight.

As others have said, it has to be a sign and trade with some term at a reasonable price. I wouldn’t give away a haul for a playoff rental, even if the Canes might reasonably be a player away this year.

In general I am all for it, but I see a specific trade being mentioned is Necas. I don’t like that trade. Over their last 20 games played they are statistically extremely similar, but Necas is younger and not coming off injury. We are guaranteed to get something for Necas this summer if we can’t keep him since he is RFA. Happy to have Guentzel for some package that includes lesser player(s) and/or picks+prospects though.
The only other thing that I would mention is Crosby is apparently pretty keen on Guentzel so I still wouldn’t rule out a last second contract extension either. Seems unlikely now given this news but I wouldn’t rule it out completely.

We’re not in on this. Reports are nobody talking with him has negotiated term afterwards. No way we pay his price for 20+ games.
