The New York Islanders fell behind 2-0 but scored a dramatic comeback win over the St. Louis Blues, 4-2. The Isles have now won four straight and are back in the thick of the hunt for the Stanley Cup playoffs. We have our hero and goat of the game along with our key takeaways and some of the reasons the Isles were able to win the game.
Plus, before the game, the Islanders made some roster moves including placing Scott Mayfield on LTIR. Mayfield will miss at least 4-6 weeks. This move gives Lou Lamoriello some cap space to add a player at the NHL Trade Deadline without trading away a key player on the current roster. We discuss the full implications of that.
And we have our weekly Farm Report on all things Bridgeport Islanders.
All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

Dog shit win that keeps the chase for eighth alive. At least isles outshoot blows and win this time. Unlike the 37 second loss at blows 12 days ago. May not have to worry about tdl. I can't find isles attached to any tdl rumours as of tonite. So maybe louzer is saved from himself and can't compete in this years tdl festivities unless he dumps some dead weight. Very unlikely. Louzer should be locked in a closet until 3 p m friday just to be safe. And some crazy ass tdl rumours out there. One has casucks sending lindholm to b's meaning van. can't get lindholm signed. Then guentzal goes to casucks, debrusk to pens. And mantha now a vgk, traded for a second. And a funny video out there that ranks all the gm's 1-32. The lowest on the 'meh' scale. Guess who was ranked last and a 'MEH' gm? I'll give you a hint-he's a run it back king whose name rhymes with 'user'. Too fkn funny. Just hope louzer doesn't do something dumb like bring in overpriced granlund by friday, a total louzer type move. Remember the 18 move last tdl?
Excellent win for several reasons…gotta keep rolling
Is it my imagination or is the pk getting better? And it seems like every game the isles are going to have bad turnovers….Nelson and KP on fire
Great comeback win by the isles and it was desperately needed 🥰
Who are these guys? Did they switch uniforms with the Bruins? Even down 2-0, the Islanders were controlling play, getting sticks in lanes, winning board battles, deploying multiple levels of support making it tough on the Blues. Instead of running around trying to hold onto a one goal lead, in the last 10 min they allowed a total of 4 shots on goal, all by the same player (Thomas) and none of them tough. Then punctuated with an ENG. Very uplifting. Now they have 3 patsies out of 4 on deck but they shouldn't take them for granted.
What’s the matter with Wahlstrom? Seemed like a rising star then all downhill this season. Is it the injury he had earlier?
I pity the next GM (or the one after Lou’s son). This franchise is inept. There’s nothing wrong with hands off ownership, but for that to work you NEED quality hockey minds/executives and Ledecky wouldn’t know one if it screamed in his face. I maintain any competent ownership group would have vetoed the mayfield and Engvall deals. I imagine it will take close to a decade to course correct this franchise after this era of Lou is finally through.
If I understand ourGM Palmieri Nelson Cizikas and JGP need new seven year extension …….are we going to feel sorry for this wins….ÒOOOYEAH everything but winning cup will be disaster for this team 😢…LGI ❤
LGI!!!! Keep it going. 👍
Great description of the win, Gil. I can tell you are genuinely enthusiastic about this, and you should. A win like this makes me want to believe. The way they came back and won showed that just maybe the Islanders have something going here with this winning streak. You can see the tangible evidence now with Patrick Roy's impact with the Islanders based on your description about the Islanders forwards.
Now, the Islanders have to translate this by applying what they did out West. This means beating the Sharks and Ducks.
I always believe they're a good team I said it before I will say it again. Give them this year I said
Still 4 points out of a playoff spot. They suck.
Let’s go Islanders
ahl b'port always depressing. 43 pts. Tied with mild ahl for fewest pts. One pt. behind sorry sj ahl team. And 6 of dufours 11 goals are on pp. Would be nice to see ish to maggio in nhl. And tdl. One name quietly out there is necas in car. Word is if canes get a big fwd. like guentzal they could move necas an rfa with arbitration rights. Car. concerned about a shaky freddy andersen in goal. Canes have 8 ufa's plus 2 rfa's including necas after season and are known to be frugal. Remember aho and his offer sheet? Young scorer with arb. rights. Should/could louzer swing for and get necas using that first he'll trade and say varly for necas maybe taking andersen in deal? Oh who am i kidding? No fkn chance louzer pulls that one off for a young goal scorer, a big isle need. Canes an older team's window wont be there forever. Waddell might swing at this tdl. If isles are gonna trade first-again-that's who you trade it for. A young scorer. Not an old third liner or 4 d man.
I must confess, after the 2nd Blues goal, I said, "here we go again" and went to bed. Woke up pleasantly surprised…. Awesome! I guess after the Greig Slapshot into the empty net the other night Barzi wasn't going there. 😂😂😂
These guys are finally getting their scoring touch back after suppressing their offensive instincts for so long. Horvat had a couple of major brain cramps, but what a redemption goal! Leddy was hugging him all the way but he never quit. This turn around is looking real and sustainable.
WOW. The Line Changes. The Breakouts. The Back Check. The limiting Shots on goal and penalties. THE PK. They even look faster. I must say Roy is absolutely reaching the room n KUDOS to the players for their BUY IN and their HUSTLE. Amazing turn around. 🤙🤙
Wahlstrom's contract expires after this year, but as an RFA. The Isles will still own his rights.
I called this five game win streak the day it started (not there yet …but we will be)…miracle playoff run is upon us…thank you st. pat!
The Islanders should NOT be looking to trade draft picks or minor leaguers, but they can offer cost savings for expiring short term contracts. That could work.
Wow, huge win! Why the Blues didn’t lose after scoring the first goal not one but 2, the team is finally doing what they’re supposed to, GO HARD OR GO HOME !!! Thank you Gil great show !!! LGI !!!
I'm in an islanders group on Facebook. The line changes were posted. I commented that the second line had the potential to be dangerous…feels good to be right.
HUGGGGEEEEEEEE WIN!!! do you see Roy’s system working day in day out??? SOG defensively are down tremendously… our O zone time has almost been better than our opponents every game. We have a 5 game stretch of beatable teams on the west coast. LFG!!!!!!
Good 🌄, Gil, how are you? The Isles made St. Louis 🎶 The blues like I knew they would, but they had to work to do it. They were down 2-0, but they held it together and came back, and Bo Horvath made some serious amends and won the game in the end. Patrick Roy got to them mentally, and it worked. Now, The Islanders have to go on The West Coast, and a trip like that can make or break a team. Playing injured all year can do a number on a player. Oliver Wahlstrom is skating on thin ice no pun intended. Lou Lamoriello has 2 days to make any type of deals. Getting back to the upcoming trip to California, Patrick Roy will tell them to be the three C's CALM, COOL, AND COLLECTED. They're going to need to be. Hear from you tomorrow, Gil. LET'S GO ISLANDERS.
I hope to see an exciting end of season for the Isles, and if they make the playoffs that would be amazing with Roy behind the bench, all that experience from Roy and the players will make the Isles dangerous in the playoffs
Good morning Gil, it was a nice comeback and happy for the players and fans 🎉 I thought overall they played 3 good periods. We are in the right direction with Patrick Roy 🎉leaving today and the weather in Florida was fantastic ..love your show 😊 thanks 🙏
Morning Gil, I’m loving the amount of shots the team is taking. IMO I felt like the team under Lane Lambert held the puck too long.
