When the NHL arena breaks down during a game

Last night as the Tampa Bay Lightning came into Philadelphia, we had an odd one to say the least. We got a power outage just 6 minutes into the first period. Ironically, the Flyers actually tweeted before the game to “bring the electricity”… But I have never seen something quite like it, as the after a brief delay, the NHL decided to play on in the dark. So that meant we had players not knowing when to come out of the penalty box, the refs were late to come out for the 2nd period as they didn’t have a clock and just overall, a very interesting throwback to 70s 80s era hockey with the shadows and dim lighting. As for the game, the Flyers played a great game while Vasilevsky struggled for the Lightning. I cover it all and more in todays NHL video!

  1. Since it happened in Philadelphia somebody probably stole the copper wiring in the arena which caused the power outage.

  2. This is the second time I’ve seen this involving the Lightning. Like 15 years ago I remember there was a Lightning vs Devils game where the power went out and they postponed the game. I was upset because Tampa was up 3-0 at the time lol

  3. I was there and man, as much as I love not having to hear our cringe ass hype guy screaming over the system all night, not having music during stoppages was such a buzz kill. Great game for the Orange and Black tho!

  4. pretty sad that considering the money the nhl brings in… a standby emergency power system should be a standard..

  5. Power outages are not as uncommon as you youngsters might believe, so the off-ice officials keep the entire game clock (including penalties) on their own IN EVERY game. This was inconvenient at worst.

  6. The main lighting went out the emergency lighting came on. Tells me it was not a hard blackout something with the buildings power not the city power.

  7. As a Flyers fan, I already heard that this arena was at the bottom 24. So this may not be surprising to some people.

  8. 2002 Calder Cup Finals at Harbor Yard (Bridgeport Sound Tigers) I don't remember which game of the series, but it went into multiple OT's. At 2300, the main lighting in the arena must have hit an automatic "somebody forget the switch when everyone went home" timer. Middle of play. Took about 10 minutes to get them back on. (also, looking this up reminded me how long ago it was!)

  9. Still looked better than watching Kitchener Rangers games on Global back in the early to mid-1980's

  10. My gf was blowing me in the stands and as soon as I popped the lights went out. Fucking bizarre coincidence or does she just give great head??

  11. London Knights, playoffs, no music, announcers and we made our own fun! 9,000 fans! Sang anthem, yelled, screamed, cheered and Actually booed loudly when it came back.

  12. No blaring music in between whistles sounds awesome. North American crowds are not used to it though, so they cannot hype themselves up it seems

  13. What a throwback as a Flyers fan to when our arenas were dark, the misic was at a minimum and our jerseys were trash

  14. Kinda seems like one of the many games I played as a kid and the clocks wouldn't work. Not necessarily because the power went out, but we were outside, and the clocks would freeze. The refs whistles would frost over and freeze so they had difficulty stopping plays. Utter choas. Bit, a typical youth game in interior Alaska

  15. good job Tampa's social media manager for looking like a dipshit. first of all, Edison didn't INVENT any way to capture electric sparks in a sustainable and enclosed environment. what Edison did do is patent a bulb designed glass filled containing tin filament that we all recognize today as the Edison Bulb, or the standard Lightbulb. on top of that, Thomas Edison has literally no history with Philadelphia.
….there is however 1 name. 1 person who is highly associated with both the invention of electricity, AND Phila. BENJAMIN FUCKING FRANKLIN. i guess that's not a name Tampa's social media manager knows because they aren't paid enough to ever see a crisp 1spot. then again, with tweets like that, maybe their pay is just.
like….really. next time Tampa is in Boston, you think they're gonna tweet about how the deep dish is overrated?

  16. Did they ever figure out what caused the problem?
I thought most arenas have a backup generator to at least run the lighting and scoreboards.
Hopefully they can prevent a reoccurrence at this or other arenas.
