[The Athletic / Staple] There’s zero chance NYR are giving up Brennan Othmann or Gabe Perreault in any deadline deal. Kaapo Kakko is off-limits as well.

Good! Guentzel is a fantastic player but giving up a first + top prospect + throw-ins for what effectively amounts to a deadline rental is insanity.

  2. Silver-Tradition7797

Goodbye Guentzel, but seriously who can we pick up for 1st RW at this point?

  3. Im_a_pine_cone

This is great news! Now go get the most value possible with our other pieces Drury

  4. MrSpaceKook

Is it possible…am I…becoming a Chris Drury fan?

Really thought this was our year to truly contend. Would have been fine as long as we kept Perreault. Oh well. Every cup champ has had to sacrifice something

  6. Separate_Pound_753

Maybe Toffoli but idk if Devils will do that for us

Moving all those assets for a rental would have been a major mistake

  8. Don’t mind this. Wouldn’t want to give that much for a rental. If there was an extension in place that wasn’t 7 years long and a way we could manage the cap then I’d be more open to it. But definitely feels like it would either be a rental or a long contract we will eventually regret in the end.

    I know this is wrong

But I don’t want Carolina to have guentzel more than I want guentzel

  10. Does anyone here know that Guentzel isn’t even a RW?

  11. Stonewall30NY

Good, we can get a good rental for picks and other prospects

  12. PrestigiousFlan1091

If they aren’t going for it this year, then when? 93, 10 and 20 aren’t getting any younger.

Honestly, the majority of this group got the team 3/4 of the way through the season to be a top 5 team in the league, and the new members are already an improvement over the ones they replaced. If they can’t figure it out for the playoffs, then use the assets we’re saving up now to make major off season moves.

Burning them now for rentals is not only short sighted, but also risks breaking team cohesion and chemistry that they built up over the past half a year from games and practice and strategy sessions.

  14. I’d imagine that Pitt will be hesitant to give us Guentzel at a discount anyway. While he is great, I can’t help imagine that he is the type of high profile player who comes to NY and just doesn’t perform the same. Plus he does not help our biggest need at RW. Who does he replace on PP1? He will need top ice time so who is losing out? I just don’t think it makes sense.

  15. I don’t mind this but we are in a tough spot where moving for Guentzel is too costly for a rental but Vatrano is a significant downgrade compared to Guentzel and while I like Duclair, I’m not sold on him either.

We are going to make a move but our pick/assets to spend are limited and there are not a lot of options on the market for us.

  16. This place would have not been able to handle the 1994 deadline deals that Smith and Keenan made.

Perhaps there is another deal in the works (albeit not a major one), by the deadline, but if this team doesn’t have a good run in the playoffs – this summer may be when this team needs to make bigger moves.

Not trying to be a doomer here but I don’t see how we beat these other teams that really took a step forward with these trades, specially if we don’t nail a legit RW1

  18. ancillaryacct

oh, but /u/kingjames_684 said that drury could possibly trade them? are you saying that he’s wrong?!?!

    😂

  19. Mr-Dicklesworth

As much as I hated when Sather would break the bank for rentals, at some point you gotta do an all in push.

Callahan was a fan fave and captain, yet Sather shipped his ass off for aging St Louis and it almost won them the cup. Kakko is both way worse than Callahan and Guentzel is better than old Marty. Plus if you could get him for just prospects and the first I’d do it. If they win the cup but then suck for however long I don’t care

  20. solaire_flare

no doubt Perrault looks like the rw of the future for New York.

Rangers window is now so they do need a winger, even if it isn’t guentzel.

If they were to acquire guentzel w/ some sort of extension in place I could understand, but cap is always so tight. Rental is ludicrous to give up those assets.

  21. jhealey0909

Frank Vatrano or Anthony Duclair, YOU are returning to the New York Rangers!

  22. I can understand the hesitation not giving up prime assets for a rental given our cap situation but if Tuch is really in play isn’t it a no brainer to include Othmann? Perrault in untouchable no question but a first paired with Othmann and other assets for a guy under a reasonable contract for 2 more years. With the Panthers and Vegas doubling down in the last 24 hours sure seems like a no brainer to include Othmann at least.

  23. nyrangers95

No shocker considering lack of picks moving forward

  24. kiddocontay

i’m happy to hear this. Jake Guentzel is the *only* player i’d trade Kakko and our 1st round pick/prospects for. If we are out on him, then bravo Drury for making the right decision and putting these assets as off limits.

  25. NicholasDeOrio

Allowing Carolina to get Guentzel would be a mistake… we are in our cup window now.
