The reason for that is the other side of the trade. The Ducks got the 1st and a conditional 2025 5th round pick that upgrades to a 2025 4th round pick if the Oilers win the cup. If that happens they no longer have the 2025 4th to give to Tampa so they push back the 4th Tampa gets from 2025 to 2026.
Edit: The Wennberg trade condition is similar…on September 19, 2022 the Rangers traded with Dallas and that trade included a conditional 2025 4th round pick from Dallas going one way and Nils Lundkvist going the other way. The condition on that trade was that it would upgrade from a 2025 4th to a 2025 3rd if Lundkvist scored 55 points combined in 2022-23 and 23-24. To be clear, the pick is almost definitely a 4th round pick since Lundkvist had 16 points in 60 games last season and has 15 in 45 so far this season, so he'd need 24 points in the last 18 games for Dallas. They just couldn't trade the 4th outright without including that condition since it's still technically possible that he puts up those numbers in which case they wouldn't own the pick.
sharks pretty much have spare parts, i don't see a very active trade deadline
I guarantee you Ducks won't be drafting with that pick. They will use it as a draft capital to get young roster player. Just have to listen to Friedman and other insiders. Plus the Ducks are not at the beginning of their rebuild like people for some reason think.
