I was ecstatic yesterday.I just wanted em to address the 2c GAPING HOLE-by getting somebody mediocre.You don't need to be elite when you already have 3 of the top 10 or 15 dudes on earth-& another 2 fringe All stars.(Toewes,Nuke)-you just cant be awful-which we were. Instead they upgrade 2c from awful to good.(not great-this isn't Drasaitil or Kadri in 2022) Then they fill in the hole of losing Byrum-with a guy whos better today,& more importantly-better suited to fill a bottom 4 role.Obviously Walker doesn't have the upside of Bo.If Byrum stays healthy-I expect he will be the best player in any of these trades,& could be a star.I hope he does-since Buffalo is in the east-but he isn't that today. Usually the team who gets the best player wins-but I think that trade is win-win for both teams. Avs took from their greatest strength(maybe the best in the nhl)-dman quality,& depth-& fixed by far your greatest weakness 2c.
But even if Bo turns into a superstar in 3 yrs-& I hope he does-this still makes sense.Biffalo is at a totally different stage,& can be patient-we gotta strike while Mac,Toewes,Rantanen,& Nuke are in their primes.In 3-4 yrs,Makar still will probably be in his prime-but we could be rebuilding by then,& I expect the central will be improved-cuz other teams have a lot of young talent,& promising prospects wholl improve. We have as great of high end talent as anybody-nothing is guaranteed-but ya can't let those guys down cuz your depth/2nd,& 3rdary guys just aren't adequate.Had they stopped yesterday-Id still be thrilled. But in my opinion we still had a slight weakness with bottom 6 forward depth,& 4c. Not something you HAD to fix-unlike 2c.But with the guys they got today-you fixed both of those needs. Duhane gives you more bottom 6 depth,& Trenin should be the new 4c-Im assuming.
Im working at the arena & havent been able to listen but I'm assuming Trenin is our new 4c.Ya also added some size today.Id still love to see some kind of backup,veteran goalie-#2 or #3. Ya need 3 goalies you trust in the playoffs-just in case. But whatever happens-Im so happy,& proud of this organization for PROACTIVELY addressing these needs,& the 1 gaping hole. Avs had a shot even if they had done nothing.But I wouldn't have liked our chances with such a 2c giant hole.This drastically improves their chances in my mind.In fact,I think they now have the best roster in the central-wherever they finish. I wouldn't have said that 2 days ago.We are lucky to be in the inferior central.It won't be easy-& as much respect as I have for Dallas,WPG,& Nashville-I think Edmonton,Vegas,Vancouver,& even LA are much more scary.
And Edmonton & Vegas also just got significantly better in last 48 hrs. But assuming you finish top 3-you won't have to face any of those teams til WCF,& only the 1 survivor then. I now LOVE our chances to emerge from the central,& then ya go from there.Even a conference final run would still be impressive & a lot of fun. And even that would make all this well worth it in my opinion.And these deals equip you with a roster far more suited to take on whatever powerhouse emerges from the pacific in my opinion. Well done Mcfarland,& company-whatever happens. I'm proud they are going for it,& not just sitting back,& hoping to get by with what they had-which there's an argument you could make they were already good enough but no doubt they are signifigantly better today than 48 hrs ago.
