  1. Seeing Guentzel leave is sad, but getting Bunting in return with some scrubs… ehhh. Bunting, who is a less scoring-talented Tom Wilson, makes me want to switch my favorite team.

  2. Sid didn't get a winger on par with Guentzel, but who knows what Bunting can do on a line with Crosby and/or Malkin. One of their few prospects is killing it right now in Scranton, Samuel Poulin is finally showing he is first round material after the injuries and the other issues, they might as well bring him up for the rest of the season, because I don't see a future where Poulin isn't with the big team next season. Kinda sad about Ty Smith too, last year he put out decent points and +/- and he was one of their other young #1 draft picks they acquired by robbing the other team. I can sense that after the blowout against the Caps yesterday that they might have thrown the towel, even if the 3 teams ahead of em barely are (including the Caps), NJ are on a downward spiral and the NYI are very "eh" and PIT still have games in hand. I'm sad Jake's gone for sure…but that's a lot of young talent and they needed more of that.

  3. This looks to me more like a baseball trade than a hockey trade, in the sense that PIT got back a lesser winger with more term, picks, and a bunch of lottery ticket prospects. The 3 non-NHL guys I view as the baseball equivalent of young A-ball Dominican hard throwers – will any of them turn into major leagures? Tough to say this early. But if one (or more) of them does, then the Pens look like geniuses in a few years.

  4. If Adam Henrique, Elias Lindholm, and if Sean Monahan were each separately worth a non-conditional 1st, then Jake Guentzel + Ty Smith combined being only worth essentially a late 2nd is the biggest slap in the face Dubas could of delivered to the Penguins franchise. He's so obsessed with chasing his white whales from Toronto that he's making terrible decisions.

  5. It's a significant trade for both teams. Carolina got a guy who can be slotted in Bunting's spot, or be moved to the first line and drop Teravainen down one slot. Pittsburgh had to get younger and with this trade, they did. Bunting is not the scorer that Guentzel is, but he is still a solid player.

  6. As if losing 6-0 to the Caps didn't hurt enough, they just had to go and rub salt in the wounds. I knew he wasn't staying, but I feel like they didn't get enough.

Here's hoping he's just a rental and will return to the Pens this summer. Not gonna happen, I know, but there's no harm in dreaming 😄

  7. as a canes fan, i’ve been sick and tired of hearing “we like our guys” every TDL and getting eliminated once “our guys” don’t play up to their talent. a big trade like this and freddie coming back we might just be cup contenders again

  8. Carolina over paid. Bunting's numbers under rate his actual performance. Bunting has been a large moving cog in the line up. Guentzel will have to come in and be on fire to replace him.

  9. Kyle Dubas doing kyle like things lol Didn't even get a confirmed 1st? And the best prospect in the deal is a 5'10" C? hahahah

  10. Haha i love watching Dubas flail. Hes such a bad GM its insane. Go get Barrie again Dubas! That'll help!

  11. It's a fair price considering no extension is in place, if the canes sign him then it looks good for them. The fact they likely dont get a 1st isnt great for the Pens but the get a decent player and a couple prospects that could pan out

  12. Pens fans are freaking out over a perceived poor return on this trade. The are overlooking the fact that JG is nothing more than a rental for Carolina, and the fact they got anything for him is a positive. He could have just walked after the season and left Pitt with nothing.

  13. Sad about Jake but idk if we could have resigned him.. guess it’s better to have something than nothing đŸ«€

  14. I love this trade. Guentzel is just the type of player we need to produce offense in the playoffs. Bunting was okay for us but he's not exactly been spectacular and he's officiating poison, which could really hurt us in the playoffs — virtually no infractions against him from other players are called and he gets called for everything because the refs see him as a "diver" from a couple of incidents when he was on the Leafs. I'm sad to see Ponomarev go, he looked like he could be a really solid NHL player, but to get a player of the caliber of Guentzel you have to sacrifice some valuable pieces. I'm fine with the draft picks, too — most likely we just end up paying a second round pick, and if we end up paying a first and a fifth it's because we made the finals and won the Cup, so who would be complaining then? Overall I think Don Waddell is doing a fantastic job as GM and building this team in a way that allows us to win now but also be sustainable for the future. We don't mortgage our future to win now, which is why we've had playoff success every year since Rod has been head coach and Don has been GM.

  15. This was a good deal for the Penguins. Not great but good.
Too many Pens fans have an emotional attachment to Guetzel. He is around 30, has played eight years, gets hurt a lot and is smallish in stature.

Those who are pulling their hair out or wearing hairshirts need to get a grip. The Pens need to rebuild. The core has seen its best days and they are gone.

  16. I’d rather take this trade than Guentzel potentially walking in free agency. Such a bad season by the pens terrible

  17. Guentzel and his representation made it clear no contract would be negotiated before the end of the year. Dubas was handcuffed by Guentzel’s 12-team no trade and the fact that Dubas didn’t want to lose a player like that for nothing in free agency. It wasn’t a great return, but Dubas didn’t want to take any chances of losing Guentzel for nothing.

  18. Will always appreciate Jake for what he brought to this team. Excited to see what he does in Carolina. With that being said, hockey fans be real with me are the prospects we got in the trade top 6 potential? Our fans r absolutely irate at this trade but I honestly dont think it’s that bad for a rental. Sets up our future potentially.
