Boston Bruins Trade Deadline Reaction: Did they do enough to make a Cup run? | NHL on ESPN

What’s up everyone it’s Emily Kaplan with ESPN I’m here in ESPN’s campus in Bristol Connecticut just found a quiet room to sit in because the NHL trade deadline just passed and I’m going to share my early thoughts on what went down or didn’t go down with the Boston

Bruins so they did make two trades they add Andrew Peak a very physical defenseman he’s definitely ready for playoffs in that sense and it makes sense because Derek forber who’s just a shot blocking machine unfortunately is going on LT and it does sound quite serious so that builds the needs there

It gives them some fortification on the blue line I really like that pickup though they did give up a decent amount giv up on Jacob zoral a third round pick it was pretty decent but this is a good pickup as well as Pat maroon and Pat maroon is the Beloved guy around the

League I’ve covered him for years a really affable personality and most importantly a Stanley Cup champion he’s going to go on the fourth line he’s going to give you that that grit the jam he’ll fight he’ll make the guys laugh he’ll SHP he’s going to be a fan

Favorite in Boston um and Pat maroon I should mention is coming off back surgery but will be ready to play before the end of the regular season but these are just two depth players and what was so interesting about the Bruins is in the days leing up to the deadline I kept

Hearing from people around the league that the Bruins were plotting something big those are juicy rumors and rumors that you do look into and it’s true here’s what I can tell you about what was going on in some of their front office conversations theyve two players who are pending ufas that means they

Become free agents this summer in Matt grizzli and Jake debrusk management didn’t get to a contract extension or really got meaningful talks with either of those players to the point where they both knew that they were potential to get moved at the deadline and I know specifically on grizzli the Brewers are

Making a lot of calls trying to move his contract met grizzli by the way heart and soul type player gets it is all for Boston Dad’s on the ice cream there he’s a Boston kid at heart and beloved in the locker room and when you hear something like that of a

Guy like that getting shopped around you know it’s just a business decision you have to make difficult decisions at this time of year they did not find a trade partner so grizzli and de Brusque both stay I think especially with de Brusque they’re kind of viewing this as their

Own rental we’ll see what happens in the summer of course anything can happen over the next few months um but neither of them end up moving but the Bruins in general just had not that much cap space they also don’t have very much um prospects or high draft picks because

Theyve traded them all in the past including last year in their president’s trophy season when they really went for it um but their biggest asset for trades were players on their roster so no one grizzli no one uh depress the really juicy one here and Kevin weeks first

Reported this on our trade deadline show on the point with lenus alar an area of absolute strength for the Bruins is their goal tending Tandem lenus alar and Jeremy San lar we just have to say it the reigning VZ winner as the best goalie in the entire leag League last

Year and yet he found himself in trade conversations the Brewers were taking I don’t want to call it significant but I will call it enough to write home about uh calls like a healthy amount of calls on lenus armar because there’s such a gending thirst around the league and

This is an incredible guy um who shows up so much on the ice off the ice of course teams were interested and see what it take to Prime away also his contract at just $5 million is pretty palatable for teams to take on there was

A deal that got to the point where the Bruins management had to come to lenus almark and ask him if he’d be willing to go there and wave his no movement clause or his trade protection to go to this team and Lena alar said no he has every

Right to do that by the way players earn that language in their contract and good on him so that trade didn’t materialize and now they run it back with lenus alar and Jeremy Swan and net me personally I’m completely fine with it this has been their recipe for this success over

The last two years last year in the playoffs I feel like one of the things that really hurt them in that first round was sticking withar and not going back to the Tandem and the rotation that benefited them all year especially when we found out later that Omar was nursing

An injury I felt like they needed to get swan in at some point so we’ll see how they handle the rotation when it comes to this year’s playoffs this year by the way Jeremy swan has outplayed lenus alar a bit and just given his age he’s younger than allar given the way that

He’s ascending and finding his groove right now the team has been talking to Jeremy Swan’s agent about a contract extension and it feels like he’s their goal tender of the future so both of these goalies stay I’m cool with that my biggest issue with the Bruins though is

They add two depth pieces but we’ve known all year long ever since Patrice berson and David Cree left the team their biggest area of need is Center they had Matt ptra make the team out of camp and it was such a great story but he’s injury plagued it was a lot for him

To make that jump from Junior they were kind of exposed in that position they have plenty of guys who have stepped up they’ve obviously been a capable team because they’re now still one of the League’s best but if you’re going to make that long playoff run Center depth

Is so crucial their number one target was Alias Lyle he went to the Vancouver Canucks weeks ago the Bruins I can tell you were pretty they wanted them they were upset that they didn’t get them there was still a chance that they were going to get them because he goes to

Vancouver and Jim Rutherford has the nickname around the league as Trader Jim he puts out some insane ideas and he actually floated flipping lennholm who was already their trade deadline acquisition to Boston if they were going to be able to Land Jake gzel in Vancouver that didn’t happen but that

Was a real possibility so okay you lose out of lolm the problem is it is very difficult to get centers at this time of year it’s difficult to get centers anyway you either draft and develop them and totally look out with a patri berson or you’re stuck looking them for them

Years to come there were guys available though and there were ones that were under contract for multiple years that it’s a bigger trade to do again more of a hockey trade but the Bruins best asset is the roster players like could have done something like this I’m talking

About Scott lton from Philly there was a very high asking price on him but man would Bruins fans love that guy or Nick Dow um Nick Dow is playing in the Washington Capitals organization he was available for trade as well Alex wenberg went to the New York Rangers that could

Have been a guy that they got and just the fact that they didn’t address the center position position I think might be a Miss for them other than that though this is such a close-knit locker room their guys really love each other they play hard for each other and they

Play a style that works Jim Montgomery is one of the most brilliant coaches in the game he’s pushed all the right buttons with this group I still think they have what it takes to go in a long run but we’re always going to look back to this deadline and wonder what If

ESPN’s Emily Kaplan breaks down the two trades the Boston Bruins made ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline as they acquired Andrew Peeke from Columbus and Pat Maroon from Minnesota. She also discusses other moves that were in the works but ended up not going through.
