i don’t think non sharks fans really understand the tomas hertl trade. he’s an amazing player and one of the best sharks of all time. the sharks would have to pay 8.1 mill for the next 6 years and instead it’s only 1.5 million. hertl is going to be aging out fast sadly. he’s already very injury prone and getting to be on the wrong side of 30 soon. plus the sharks leading scorer is actually mikael granlund with 40 points in 50 games. hertl should’ve been traded two seasons ago however dumbass doug extended him for a massive contract. personally i thought mike grier was amazing this deadline. by the time the sharks are good, they’d be paying a very old tomas hertl for a massive amount of their cap space. i would much rather take the 1.5 mil contract then the full 8 mil. also edstrom is basically a guaranteed 3rd line center of the future and you never know what you can get with that first round pick. also griers other moves at the trade deadline were pretty excellent. i liked every deal other then the okthuyc deal for a with which i thought didn’t really make a lot of sense. anyways the sharks are rebuilding and i think they’re going in the right direction.
I think the massive mistake made here was made by the previous Shark GM Doug Wilson, who, by the way, up until the time he departed 2 years ago, had had a stellar playing and managing career. Mike Grier i think has a mandate from ownership to burn it down, right to the ground. With only the Couture contract left, and only injury prevented his trade, he will have started the future in San Jose. Which is going to be bleak….for a long time.
