Saturday Headlines: Tortorella Goes Off, Ullmark Stays Put, What Is LTIR’s Future?

>> Ron: SATURDAY HEADLINES WITH ELLIOTTE FRIEDMAN, THE ENERGIZER BUNNY, NO MORE TRADE TALK, WELL A LITTLE BIT. LAST YEAR THERE WERE TWO COFFING EJECTION, AND TODAY’S WAS THE FIFTH. >> Elliotte: IT DID NOT GO WELL TONIGHT, 4-NOTHING, TAMPA BAY, TEN MINUTES IN JOHN TORTORELLA WAS UPSET, EJECTED, UNHAPPY WITH THE PENALTY CALLS,

THEY’RE HONOURING THE 2003-4 LIGHTNING, HE WENT WOLF OF WALL STREET, I’M NOT LEAVING, BUT FINALLY LEFT, I THINK HEAVE BEEN FINED 12 TIMES IN HIS NHL CAREER, AND PROBABLY ANOTHER ONE COMING HERE, WENT VIRAL AND I DON’T THINK HE’LL FIND IT VERY FUNNY, BUT PEOPLE ARE HAVING A

GOOD TIME WITH IT ON THE INTERNET. >> Ron: AND THE FLORIDA PANTHERS, A COUPLE TOUGH BLOWS. >> THEY BEAT CALGARY, 56-1, BUT THE TALK AFTER WAS NOT SO MUCH ABOUT THE RESULT, AARON EKBLAD IN THE 1st PERIOD, HE DID NOT RETURN, AND EVAN RODRIGUEZ, WAS NO SPECIFIC UPDATES, PRACTICE

AGAIN MONDAY, SO WE’LL SEE, BUT THE PANTHERS DIDN’T APPEAR TO BE OVERLY CONCERNED THAT THESE WERE LONG TERM, MAYBE THEY MIGHT MISS A COUPLE GAMES HERE AND THERE, BUT DOESN’T APPEAR TO BE LONG TERM INJURIES FOR THE PANTHERS WITH THE PLAYOFFS. >> ROGER NEILSON, TO INNOVATION, HE DIDN’T INVENT LTIR, BUT HE’S

DONE WELL, AND TALK WITH THE FIRST INTERMISSION ABOUT SUN BELT ADVANTAGE, LAST HOUR, 7th HOUR, DEALING WITH TRADE DEADLINE, AND YOU HAVE TO MAKE A DECISION TO CONVINCE SOMEONE TO MOVE, NOT BAD TO TRY TO CONVINCE THEM TO GO SOUTH. >> Elliotte: ON THE LTIR THING, I’LL SAY THIS, I FIND IT

DIFFICULT TO CRITICIZE VEGAS ON THIS, BECAUSE IF I WAS A MANAGER, ILL DO THE EXACT SAME THING, AND I THINK THERE’S A LOT OF MANAGERS WHO FEEL VERY SIMILARLY, THAT IF THEY HAD THE KIND OF ADVANTAGE TO DO IT, THEY WOULD DO THE EXACT SAME THING. I THINK IF I HEARD ANYTHING THAT

PEOPLE MIGHT WANT TO CHANGE TODAY, IT’S THAT THERE’S A COUPLE OF MANAGERS WHO SAID THEY JUST DON’T — THEY’RE NOT 100% COMFORTABLE WITH THE IDEA THAT SOMEONE CAN’T PLAY GAME 82 BUT IS OKAY TWO OR THREE DAYS LATER TO PLAY GAME 1 OF THE PLAYOFFS, YOU CAN’T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT

UNDER THIS CBA, IT’S COLLECTIVELY BARGAINED BUT CURIOUS TO SEE WHEN WE GET TO THE NEXT CBA, IF THERE’S ANY DISCUSSION ABOUT IF YOU CAN’T RETURN IN THE REGULAR SEASON, IS THERE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TIME YOU HAVE TO MISS IN THE PLAYOFFS. I DON’T KNOW HOW MUCH SUPPORT THIS WILL HAVE.

IT MAY HAVE NONE, IT MAY HAVE A LOT, BUT I THINK IF THERE WAS ANY COMPLAINT, IT WASN’T EVEN ABOUT VEGAS, BUT THE GENERAL SITUATION, BECAUSE IT DOES SEEM WEIRD THAT YOU CAN’T PLAY GAME 82 OF THE REGULAR SEASON, AND TWO DAYS LATER YOU’RE OKAY TO PLAY IN THE PLAYOFFS, THAT’S

WHAT A COUPLE GUYS SAID TO ME. >> Ron: THE SOUTHERN ADVANTAGE? >> Elliotte: IT’S NOT THE SOUTHERN ADVANTAGE, AS THE CAP RISES, I WAS LISTENING TO WHAT YOU SAID AND TALKING WITH SOMEONE, THERE’S A REALIZATION, I DON’T KNOW IF ANYTHING CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT, THAT THE SIX

TEAMS IN THE NO TAX STATES, THEY’LL HAVE A HUGE ADVANTAGE ESPECIALLY AS THE CAP RISES, BUT I DON’T KNOW IN ANYTHING CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT. >> Ron: ULLMARK. >> LINUS ULLMARK, AND THEY WON TODAY, HE PLAYED, AND HE HAD A BIG EMOTIONAL CELEBRATION WITH JEREMY SWAYMAN, EVEN MORE, LIKE

HE STAYED HERE, SWAYMAN WITH HIM POST GAME. ULLMARK, I HEARD BEHIND THE SCENES THIS WEEK WAS VERY EMOTIONAL, IT WAS A VERY HARD WEEK FOR HIM. HE DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE BOSTON, HE WANTED TO STAY WITH THE BRUINS, AND AS WE ALL KNOW NOW, THERE WAS A TEAM, THAT WAS ON

HIS NO TRADE LIST, WHICH HE DID NOT WAIVE TO, WHICH IS HIS RIGHT, THAT IS HIS CONFRACTURE RIGHT, THERE’S ALSO A SECOND PART TO THIS. I DO BELIEVE THE BRUINS AS WELL HAD CONVERSATIONS WITH SOME TEAMS THAT HE CANNOT BLOCK A TRADE TO. AND OBVIOUSLY THOSE TEAMS DID

NOT OCCUR, BUT IN A COUPLE OF CASES, THEY WERE PUNTED INTO THE OFFSEASON, SO I THINK THIS IS GOING TO BE SOMETHING IS GOING TO PICK UP AGAIN AFTER THE SEASON, AND RIGHT NOW THE BRUINS OBVIOUSLY COULDN’T GET ANYTHING DONE, AND WERE IN A SITUATION WHERE WE’RE GOING TO SEE WHERE

THIS GOES AFTER THE SEASON IS OVER. >> Ron: ARE WE AT LIBERTY, OR DID HE CONFIRM IT WAS LOS ANGELES. >> Elliotte: HE DID NOT AND NEITHER DID DON SWEENEY. AND FINALLY, KEITH PELLEY IS THREE WEEKS AWAY OF TAKING OVER AS THE NEW PRESIDENT AND CEO OF MAPLE LEAF SPORTS AND

ENTERTAINMENT, HE’S BASED OVERSEAS, IN TORONTO THIS WEEKEND AND TORONTO, AT TFC’S OPENER TODAY AND MONTREAL TONIGHT FOR THE MAPLE LEAFS AND THE CANADIENS AND I BELIEVE THIS WE COULD HE’S GOING TO MEET WITH BRENDAN SHANAHAN, WHO RUNS THE TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS, SO WE’LL START TO SEE HOW THAT RELATIONSHIP IS GOING TO WORK,

AND OBVIOUSLY PELLEY

On this edition of Saturday Headlines, Elliotte Friedman discusses Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella’s latest outburst and ejection, Linus Ullmark staying put with the Boston Bruins, and the future of the LTIR.

  1. Why don't they bring in rule in playoffs you cant put a team on the ice over the cap. So if you have a guy on 8m coming back you would need to bench two 4m players….you get the point. The lightning were like 15m over and was a joke

  2. No reason to give Ullmark to another team. Swayman loses focus too easily in close games as the clock winds down. Hopefully he will outgrow this.

  3. %10000 agree about the LTIR and game 82…… if you don’t play in the last week of the regular season. Then u are don’t for the year

  4. I DONT UNDERSTAND the LTIR thing? ????? maybe a player is "hurt" and cant play game 80 or 81 or 82 whatever but is getting better and gets better and can play game 1 in the playoffs? whats fishy about that at all?—–

  5. I have to agree with the game 82 LTIR rule. You should have to miss the first round of playoffs. End of discussion. It’s stupid. They just do this to make cap space. Cough cough Vegas and Tampa bay

  6. Just like every pro sport… with gambling now being accepted.. all the officials in every pro sport are finally being spot lighted and it's disgusting how bad they are. And I officiated at a very high level of hockey for over 20 years. So I'm not talking out of my ass.

  7. If you’re on LTIR and can’t play game 82, then the amount of games missed should be determined by your cap hit. League min-2mil = 2 games missed, 2-5 mil = 4 games, 5-10 mil = 7 games, 10+ mil = 10 games

Or simplify it by saying for every million, rounded to the nearest, you miss one game.

  8. Cap issue with tax brackets should be easy to solve. Players contracts (and the cap) should be based off of the NET pay. This would make it equal for all teams and players. Whether you were a player in Florida that got traded to Vancouver… if your contract was 8 mil, you would NET 8 mil in both locations and count as 8 mil against the cap. It would mean Florida would only have to pay you 8 mil, while Vancouver would have to pay you closer to 13 mil in order for the player to net 8.

Dont like it Vancouver owners? Well then it’s in your power to not sign as big of contracts, or lobby your governments. But at least this way the actual salary cap and the players contracts themselves would be equal no matter what team you were playing for. No more players wanting specific teams just because of the low taxes

  9. The cap for low tax states is an easy fix, you set the cap based on tax rate for teams, Canada has horrific taxes so they get X% increase in cap calling vs Florida where there is no income tax.

  10. I love the LTIR loop hole. Big boy teams who want to win go for it. Fans of those teams win too! Fans of others, Boohoo

  11. You declare a 23 man roster before each round begins and that roster has to be cap compliant. For players acquired during the season or with retained cap hit, only the portion of their cap hit that your team was responsible for counts. Also any buyout penalties or retained money still counts towards your total cap.
