Will the Leafs power play hold up in the playoffs?

[Change in the Leafs power play from regular season to postseason.](https://preview.redd.it/pvt0r47kyrnc1.png?width=286&format=png&auto=webp&s=51ccdb615e6818470338960f9fd9b137f304f0c6)

The Leafs playoff hopes this season might depend on the performance of the team’s power play. The only playoff series the team has won recently was also the only time the power play was better in the postseason than the regular season.

What are the odds that the power play performs this time around?

[And which player(s) are responsible](https://timetimetime.substack.com/p/will-the-leafs-power-play-hold-up) for the underperformance of the past?

No, probably not. We will play one of the Bruins, Panthers, or Rangers. They all have top 8 PKs in the league.

In 22-23 we had a 26.02PP% but 25% in the playoffs.

In 21-22 we had a 27.27PP%, but 14.3% in the playoffs.

in 20-21 we had a 20PP%, 13% in the playoffs.

  2. Either way it’s one round then off to the golf courses.

id love top see league wide numbers. in my head it would make sense that most teams have worse PP% in the playoffs. but have no clue how it works in reality

I’m willing to bet the pp isn’t even holding up in the regular season against the top teams. But I’m also talking out of my ass while making zero attempt to look at stats.

  5. Gotta *get* a power play for it to be successful. Good luck with against the Bruins.

Brad Marchand has been signing sticks for the refs for almost 15 years.

  6. If they get Rielly off of it they might have a chance. I love Rielly but the team needs a threat from the point.

No it won’t. They need space for it to work and it’s easily negated.

I’d try to put Liljegren on PP1 I feel like he’s got an underrated slapshot

PP won’t be good, PK will take a hit too and the hopes of winning won’t be on that, it’s on the first line and our D.

No. And if it shows a glimmer of it being a factor the refs will put their fucking whistles away.

Most power-play numbers tend to go down across the league in the playoffs. Over a seven game series teams figure out pretty fast how to defend the opponent’s power-play.

Maybe if we finally ditch the stupid dropback pass and the slow-as-possible entry to the zone

Imagine if we came in with speed? I feel like we probably have some fast players, maybe Nylander or Marner

Maybe if they simplify the system and go to a standard umbrella style power play rather than marner on the side wall trying to cross ice pass to Matthews.

  16. What power play. I keep very close tabs on home game power play goals due to the free 8 piece nugget with drink purchase at Popeyes promo and I am having a hard time remembering when the last home power play goal was.

Unless they can address the lack of urgency, I don’t think the power play will be good in the playoffs. Aggressive power plays get the best of them. They look too much for the perfect play. That, plus seven years of history, where they have not been able to get it done.

Lol. Have you watched the past 7 post seasons?

The PP sucks and the PK tanks.
