“They Process The Game A Level Above Most” | Don Granato On Byram and Dahlin | Buffalo Sabres

TR was made it two to one and you guys just flew down the ice and immediately got that go back did you know right there and then your guys are going to have it for the night to just the way they were playing yeah you could tell

Early that uh we were we were on our game pretty good and um yeah that’s what you want you you never know going in night tonight till 7 o’ and you see what the energy levels like and you know the competitive levels like and I felt uh we were dialed in

Tonight plow ahead in these past whatever five days after losing a couple of you know big guys to the team and you know they kind of just moved on and you know they’ve played some good hockey hockey players want to play hockey so you know mentioned you know you lose

Guys and you you you’re going to miss the people that you you lost uh but there’s opportunity more ice time for the next guy and that’s what these guys want uh they want ice time and they want and we’ve got a lot of guys in the

Lineup that um you know Joe stff and uh Robinson you know more ice time gurgenson is up with with Thompson and so there’s there’s you know there’s reason for guys to be excited and clearly uh guys are playing you know U with the passion that we want what’s

Allowed that pace to come back to the to the style of game seems a lot it’s a lot faster a lot more uptempo uh than we’ve seen for parts of the Season uh a lot of work by the group you know I think it’s a progression for the group um you know

Not only have you seen the pace but uh um you know I’ve mentioned it many times to this group that stuff’s going to come back it’s going to come back there’s some things that we’ve worked on and turned our attention to that need to become second nature and as they become

Second nature and you’re not turning conscious thought to to some of those things Prim what I’m speaking of primarily is defending and defending the right way uh and you can put that in the subconscious level you you develop that skill uh the other stuff tends to to

Come back and um you know it’s still a work in progress I’ll tell you that so but tonight was a good night you mentioned playing the right way dong a few guys have even mentioned it today how play you know more guys in the room being are more accountable to the plays

That they make out there how important has it been for you to set a standard whether that’s cutting ice time or whatever else to show everybody like this is the way that we need to play if we want to have a chance I I can tell

You we’ve had a standard from day one um you know we don’t you you you bring guys in guys ice time has been cut all year uh here and there um you know whether it’s not playing or shifting line mates or you know being you know um shifted through the lineup

Um so so that’s been there I think I think the difference is they’re becoming a better you know it’s a better I’ve mentioned it since you know um the new year how much better this group is uh from a psychological standpoint um and and moving forward day

By day progressing um that’s the that’s the the big one for me they’re they’re showing um I see it because I’m the one asking them and demanding um and then you see it you see it in the film you see it you know um every night when you

Play different things are getting better uh and the hope is it you know collectively they come together sooner than later um so that continues tonight how much does the way he plays fit that pace that that you like to play with it fits it uh incredibly well it’s it’s what we want

It helps uh delene it helps push people back um you know on the other team lots of stress which carries over even to the next shift which you saw tonight uh at times so you know his his ability to play you know that Dynamic uptempo style

That we we want and defend as well as you know we’re we’re aspiring to to get to um yeah it’s it’s a big it’s a big boost you surprised at all that he started this hot I mean new team and you throw him right on the top pair and he’s

Producing like this is any bit of it surprise yeah I mean it’s it’s it is and it isn’t I guess um you knew he was capable of this and then you’re surrounding him with a guy named Rasmus Dalene um you know I wouldn’t be surprised if you had more when you’re

Playing when you have the ability he has uh and you’re playing with a guy like Rasmus and you know we’ve obviously gotten them out there with you know different different lines that are um that have done a nice job so so yeah it’s it’s a it’s a pleasant surprise but

I guess you could say is it really when you when you see him paired up with Rasmus and you know they process the game um you know at a level above most the two of them and now you know they can do things they they read off each

Other so well because of it you see that and you know you see their creativity and for us as coaches the exciting thing is we’re you know I’m going to let them play as much as you know Bo comes in he’s a new player I’m not GNA inundate him with

Information uh I want to see what chemistry’s developed and take the film myself and maybe pinpoint in target areas help them uh exploit what they might be able to and um and that’s uh that’s been a fun project the last couple days just just doing that and

Seeing them advance so quickly what does a night like this on the score sheet for Benson just show you about how far he’s come and the direction he’s going it’s a good night for him he he’s put a lot of work in and and to have a three-point

Night um could probably guess it was his first three-point night I’m sure um but he he’s put the work in uh lots of detail to his game so for him to produce um is uh he’s earned it yeah thank You
