This is utterly insane. After firing Lane Lambert on January 20th and bringing in Patrick Roy in the most controversial coaching move of the 2024 NHL season, Roy has the New York Islanders on a late-season five game winning streak – making up ground on the suddenly slumping Detroit Red Wings. The Eastern Conference Wild Card race just got nutty. #nhl

UPDATE (3/14):
The Islanders have now OVERTAKEN the Red Wings!
Eastern Conference Wild Card Standings
1) Tampa Bay Lightning (65 GP, 74 PTS)
2) New York Islanders (64 GP, 74 PTS)
3) Detroit Red Wings (65 GP, 72 PTS)
From Mike Kelly via X:
“The Islanders were bottom-five in the league in the amount of time spent defending in their own end before Roy took over. They've cut that by over a minute per 60, now ranking 12th since the coaching change. They've gone from allowing the second most rush chances to the 6th fewest and from the worst expected goals against to middle-of-the-pack, which is fine when you have an elite goalie."
“Less time defending, more time in the attacking zone. Offensively, the Islanders have gone from 5:38 OZ possession per 60 to 6:25 since the coaching change. From slightly below average in slot shots and cycle chances to 1st and 2nd, respectively. They lead the league in expected goals per 60 since Roy took over and rank 5th in goals."
“The Islanders had the second worst points percentage in the Metro when Roy took over – today, they sit 3rd. He deserves a lot of credit."
Bo Horvat on the Islanders turnaround (in the New York Post): “Honestly, I just think we’re all playing together. Obviously we’re all getting used to new systems and stuff like that. I think we have all four lines going, too, which is a big thing. Other guys are stepping up at different times.”
The Islanders finally lose in Los Angeles, snapping the six game win streak with a 3-0 loss to the Kings. Detroit had a chance to bounce back, but lost again in Buffalo the following night. Wild!
The GoalZone Curse? Talk some shit about the Blackhawks
I'd be interested to see a similar video about the wild race in the West. In the last couple months, Nashville has gone on a tear, St. Louis has been bounced hardcore, and LA has rebounded so hard they've bumped Vegas of all teams into the danger spot. All this while 4 teams are still battling and often tied a few points outside.
The Isles just love giving us fans heart attacks, most embarrassing game of the season at MetLife, lose all hope, all of a sudden, 6 game winning streak😭😭
For now. Just wait.
lol siroken looks like a hobo on a bender.
