Man, these Oliver Ekman-Larsson trade talks have been picking up with the Vancouver Canucks. It’s incredible.

Ekman-Larsson, the Arizona Coyotes captain, is making a huge $8,250,000 per year for seven more years, and is 29 years old. Wowzers.

This is coming after both the Canucks and the Coyotes were eliminated from the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and it precedes the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

The 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs involved sixteen teams, which were the Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals, Philadelphia Flyers, Montreal Canadiens, Carolina Hurricanes, New York Islanders, and Columbus Blue Jackets in the East, and the Colorado Avalanche, St. Louis Blues, Vegas Golden Knights, Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes, and Dallas Stars in the West.

The Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Dallas Stars in the 2020 Stanley Cup Finals in Game 6 to win the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Vegas Golden Knights got eliminated by the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Finals in Game 5, and the New York Islanders were eliminated by the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6.

Of the Conference Semi-Final matchups, the Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks, and Philadelphia Flyers have been eliminated.

The eliminated teams of the 2020 NHL Playoffs from the qualifying play-in series are the Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, Nashville Predators, Minnesota Wild, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Florida Panthers.

Teams eliminated from the first round of the 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs are the St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames, Arizona Coyotes, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Montreal Canadiens, Carolina Hurricanes, and the Washington Capitals.

The current NHL rankings for the 2020 NHL Draft go as follows:

  1. Only will do this trade if it is Erickson for OEL one for one. Arizona have zero leverage and they are strapped for cash and more or less have to move OEL.

  2. He really wants Boston and we can’t wait to have him! Canucks need their cap space for Hughes, Pettersson, and Demko. Bruins have the space and can move Vaakanainen Moore Bjork and a first no problem. Bruins got this one Don just needs to pull the trigger!

  3. If Boston and Van are the only teams OEL will accept trade to and with both teams not having a 1st round pick no cap space and no young D to send the other way. It is safe to say OEL doesn't want to go anywhere lol

  4. First off, how awesome is it that a player like Oliver Ekman-Larsson is dying to come to Vancouver? He knows what's up with this team. I like that, but the price could hurt us BAD. If he maintains pace or thrives with our players and system, Benning could look like a genius. But if he declines, this team is set back years chained to an awful, AWFUL contract. If he really wants us, take Loui and maybe Olli and Arizona should eat some salary. Otherwise, Boston can feel free to give up as much as they want for him!

  5. 3 way deal. Boston gets tyler myers, Arizona gets ferland, Virtanen, woo, 2020 boston 2nd, 2021 Vancouver 2nd , Vancouver gets OEL

  6. Ok I’m having mixed feelings about this… he’s a good addition but we’d be so screwed Cap-wise

  7. If they don't retain salary it's a disaaster, they'd need to keep half on their books to make it worth while. It's possible OEL plays hardball and we get a palatable trade.

  8. Sure, he wants to play here. But how do we satisfy a 8.25mil cap hit for 7 years? Straight trade for Eriksson and Tanev walks?

  9. Well, it kinda depends on if the Coyotes are concerned with the cap or with real money.
If it is real money then it's not that bad as most of the Canucks "bad contracts" have very little "real money" left to be paid out…..

  10. A message to GMJB: Remember you signed someone named Loui Eriksson at 6×6, 4 years ago? Loui was 31yo. We all thought he would fit well w/ Sedins. Last year's Tyler Myers at 5 x 6?? And now, do we want another case of 8 x 8.25??????

  11. The Myers contract will be something to regret soon enough Benning should concentrate on freeing up money for Pettersson and Hughes and younger players , Larsson will be soft in own end the last thing Canucks need .

  12. Good choice OEL, Vancouver is awesome, but no. Stay the heck away, rather have Loui for 2 years than $8.25 per in his post 30s

  13. I like OEL, but that's a hard PASS. Canucks can't afford to take on an $8.25 million contract with Pettersson and Hughes contracts looming, especially with a flat cap for the next couple of years. OEL showing signs of regression…no guarantee his game will pick up once he gets to Vancouver. If it doesn't, the Canucks will be stuck with that guy for 7 years. Let Boston take that chance on him.

  14. Nils Höglander (~1st round equivalent value), Rathbone (~3rd), and Sutter (~5th).
    .
If Benning gets serious, this trade is gonna include Höglander as its anchor, because there's no way he'll part with Podkolzin, and there's no first round pick available until too long from now for Arizona to bite on.
    .
Coyotes save many many millions season over season offloading OEL, so a coupla years of Loui at 2.5m real dollars per is not gonna be the issue.
    .
That said, the Canucks need to sacrifice an impact player and find extra value somewhere else to make this trade possible, and Loui ain't adding any value to that equation.
    .
Unfortunately for the Coyotes, the hard truth is that Canucks require some cap going out for next season, in the very least, for this trade to be possible.
    .
Sutter serves the Coyotes better in that regard and therefore represents value.
    .
Let's not forget that the OEL contract is sooo long and full of mad cash (i.e. $10.5m per in 2021-24) that one day he too could easily become an albatross, and maybe even Eriksson could be an even more fair and equitable salary dump than Sutter, because it's not like Arizona has a lot of options here to get too choosy. It's either Vancouver or Boston, that's it.
