GAME RECAP: Penguins vs. Red Wings (03.17.24) | Crosby Ties Gretzky

After a quick turnaround, the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted the Detroit Red Wings. Looking to bounce back from the previous game, the Penguins came to play. Reilly Smith started the scoring by tipping in a shot from Marcus Pettersson. Lucas Raymond responded for the Red Wings. Before the Period was over, the Penguins took the lead back. Sidney Crosby scored unassisted. That goal tied Crosby with Wayne Gretzky for the seventh-most goals with a single franchise in NHL history. Quickly after the Penguins got a second goal from Valtteri Puustinen. Tic tac toe passing from below the goal line, Smith passed to Puustinen in the slot. In one motion, Puustinen collected the pass and shot the puck into the back of the net. Penguins ended the period with a 3-1 lead. Michael Bunting continued the scoring in the 2nd period. Puustinen sent a shot on net and Bunting dove to tap in the rebound. Late in the 2nd, Christian Fischer scored for Detroit, but the Penguins answered right back. Crosby, looking for a body in front, saw Lars Eller’s stick and placed a perfect pass for Eller to redirect in. The Penguins held a 5-2 lead heading into the third. Detroit gave a big push near the end of the game, pulling their goalie and scoring a late power-play goal. The Red Wings pulled their goalie again for the extra attacker. The Penguins were able to fend off the Red Wings and score an empty net goal for comfort to end the game 6-3 for the Penguins.

  2. Man this win felt like a breath of fresh air…it's been a tough last-half of the season…glad to see the Pens CAN STILL play really well when running on all cylinders !!

  3. Am I understanding this right, when it says Crosby tied Gretzky with 7th most points in a single franchise, is that meaning to say how many points each player played with a single team before leaving? Like the amount of points Gretzky scored before leaving the Oilers?

  4. 87 scored his 583rd goal with 1 team tying Wayne Gretzky who had 583 goals with the Oilers for the 7th most goals with 1 franchise.
