I like it. PP hasnt been working but it was working when Rielly was suspended and Timmy took top spot, so try it out again. This also tells me they aren’t expecting Marner back just yet (though, we may have already known that).

Worth doing. Really hope Marner returns soon. He is missed. But considering the Leafs are pretty much locked into their current playoff spot positioning getting healthy for the playoffs should be the priority.

Wow, Keefe finally doing the obvious 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I think the problem with Mo on the PP1 is that he’s closer to a 5th forward than a traditional QB. He doesn’t launch a booming shot through traffic from the point a lot, but instead gets in front of the net for a tip or rebound attempt.

I think Mo on PP1 can work well if we run both Lilli and Mo and treat Mo as the 4th forward instead of D. But then that begs the question of who does he replace as the 4th forward in this hypothetical scenario.

That said I think the main issue of the PP is the lack of a certain fella named Mitch Marner.

The PP has been unclawed and completely disjointed so trying anything new is welcome at this point.

Meanwhile on r/Leafs “wHy isNT beNOiT pLayiNG inSTeAd of LilJEGreN?”

  7. I’m fine with it – 20ish games, locked into 3rd in the Atlantic. Take advantage of it to experiment and see what else you’ve got.

44/88/91/34/16 has been a top 10 PP in the league for nearly 6 years now, and have gone very cold come playoff time, so might as well see if there’s a plan B available.

D Pairings at pratice with no Lyubushkin

    Rielly — Brodie

    Benoit — McCabe

    Edmundson — Liljegren

Nothing for forward lines so I’m assuming it’s the same as last game

PRAISE BE, THE PRODIGAL LILLY HAS RETURNED TO PP1

  10. MitchMarner

lets go hopefully it sticks. rielly just doesnt mesh on the PP. lilly probably gives up more shortys against but the PP is better for it

Sheldon Keefe is a shit coach. Liljegren shouldnt even be playing let alone PP1. Might as well have 5 forwards than 4 and 1 Dman that sucks at playing D. Leafs are definitley getting bounced 1st round with this d corps

This team really needs to find a PP1QB in the offseason. If this teams PP could operate at a high level for an entire season it’s game over.

I know that was one of the reasons for going after Klingberg and unfortunately that didn’t work. I’d love someone with a booming shot.

Mathews, Marner, Nylander with a net front presence and a QB1 and we should have a top 3 PP for the next 5 years.

I think it’s worth another shot – Liljegren has to be careful not to lose his spot by giving up SH goals against. Keefe took him off after that, and it just happened again against Philly.

I actually don’t think either SH was his fault, but still.

Woah the guy who’s draft stock (before mono) was, “walks the offensive blueline better than anyone else” is finally getting PP1 time? Whomst have thought-ed.

  15. I’ve been saying this through the downvotes for a while now…. but Mo is NOT the issue with the powerplay. He plays 100% into their strategy and design. its designed to be fluid, moving constantly, and shots from the flanks. he facilitates that great. and to be honest there’s not many more D on the PP better at stopping the puck from leaving the zone. the amount of ring arounds and wide shots that he traps along the board compared to anybody else is crazy. its something he excels at.

the biggest problem i’ve seen for years is their entry. their neutral zone strategy is terrible and they rarely break in clean. when they do…they set up and are lethal…but the amount of times they’re pinched off and turned back is criminal.

i’ve seen two areas of weakness related to this. the first is the drop back…. AM and MM drop WAY too far back. the drop back works when you get the other teams feet moving and dont let them reset and stack up. AM and MM catching the puck on the ringette line or below, when its been dropped from near the red line…just allows teams to adjust. watch other teams do it and clock the time from drop to attack. leafs leave too much time there.

the other is once inside the blue they always drop it to the man on the boards on a fly by. teams are wise to it and let the puck carrier go and pinch off the drop man. he’s under immediate pressure, and doesnt have time to set up and get the chess pieces in place.

If putting Lilly in for Mo fixes either of those, i’m all for it, but it won’t. and Mo > Lilly every day of the week…so to me this makes the PP less effective.

also…this old “need a booming shot from the blueline” is not the way most teams run their PPs now. how many big boomers run top end power plays out there…compared to goals being scored by pasta/drai/OV/kuch/point etc. The game and PPs have evolved away from it.

  16. Leafs PP was better with liljegren, you guys think too highly of Reilly

  17. I like it. What Keefe needs to do though is keep it that way for a few games. Don’t bail on it after one PP opportunity

  18. Pivotalrook

It worked pretty damn well, I had my doubts but seeing the way things have been lately. Come on down Timmy!

  19. Good change. PP was lighting it up with Lilly at the point so it’s worth an extended look.

  20. billcosbyinnocence

This is good. Mo cannot QB a PP. its why on every single Leafs PP, it’s Matthews and Marner always doing the entry, Liljegren is better offensively, fast, and can actually shoot.

  21. Hoardzunit

Holy shit, Keefe finally did something right.

  22. bigcaulkcharisma

It blows my mind how Keefe hasn’t factored Domi into PP1 with Mitch out. Like of you’re looking for another playmaker/puck distributor to put in that spot he’s probably your next best bet.

  23. Secondusx

For the love of sweet god… can we please fucking stop putting Rielly / Brodie together… it’s insanity at this point.

Genuine question: Does the coaching staff not even watch game film? Why do they keep doing this, knowing very well it doesn’t work? I’m convinced it has to be some deliberate torture to us fans.

  24. clapperssailing

Dude is one of the poison pills on the team for years now. Wake up toronto
