Could Markstrom stay put beyond the deadline?

With the trade deadline just over a week away, Craig Button and Kevin Weekes join That’s Hockey host Gino Reda to break down Jacob Markstrom’s market and what the Oilers should be searching for in return for their first-round pick.

  1. Fitzgerald isn't going to overpay for a goalie. Same situation happened with Helle last offseason. Fitz also just got an extension. I think he's OK with us missing the playoffs if it means not giving up younger assets he can develop.

  2. As a Flames fan , the only was I’m ok with trading Markstrom , is a.) if we get a huge haul , and b.) find a different mentor for Dustin Wolf. A perfect fit would be UFA Marc-Andre Fleury. He’s only making 3.5 million on his current deal , so at 39 , you could sign him for 2.5 million for two years. He’d probably only want 35 games a year , giving Wolf 47 games. It would ease Wolf into the league , he wouldn’t be sitting on the bench as Markstrom’s backup , and he’d be learning how to be successful as a goalie of smaller stature from Fleury.

  3. Button’s logic: the better the playoff push by Calgary (as opposed to NJ), the higher the price for Markstrom.
Reality: the more out of it NJ is, the less sense it makes to pay a high price for Markstrom before the deadline.

  4. If you’re not making the playoffs why would you not sell off when the market is good. He’s going to get a good return not being a rental

  5. DEVILS NEED TO PULL THE TRIGGER……CALGARY HAS ALREADY QUIT THEY ARE DUMPING PLAYERS….AND WHAT IS BUTTON TALKING ABOUT??
