Flyers hold on vs the Leafs as Captain Sean Couturier is a healthy scratch. What does it all mean?

On today’s show, Russ & Rachel ask if scratching newly named Philadelphia Flyers Captain Sean Couturier was the right thing to do before the game and with hindsight on how it turned out? We also get into the regular callups of Adam Ginning & Olle Lycksell, and if that younger power play unit looked good. We also recap the Flyers vs Leafs overall and what was different this time to get the win. Finally we answer your questions on Denver Barkey, retirements after Wayne Simmonds, and more.

  1. I think Torts knows what he's doing.
Yeah the timing of this decision is questionable, but I think scratching Coots was a motivational move for the other players saying anyone can be scratched at any time .
And the Flyers were motivated and they won .
He's squeezing every last drop of blood out of this team to make the playoffs and that's what this organization wants
    Right?

  2. Russ, how can you turn everything into a negative? Can’t you just leave it as praise for Frost’s play without ‘worrying it’s a tryout for him to be traded to the Leafs.’

  3. Don't make a big deal out of it. He's a quality pro & knows it's a "what have you done lately" league. And when Couts looks in his mirror he will accept that his recent play, offensively & defensively, are struggling. He needs a break. The legs are slow & heavy. He realizes it too. His only contributing value right now is his face-off win percentage.

  4. This is what Torts does. Now we'll have to worry about a disgruntled player, and the media running with it. Coots contributes in different ways which don't always show up on the score sheet.

  5. You can't have Couts just sit on the bench waiting for a late game face off situation. Torts has to coach the best line-up for the whole game. Couts, Atkinson, Stall, & Johnson were all minus-4's in the recent 6-5 loss to the Leafs. The Flyers were lucky, the Leafs hit so many pipes.

  6. I have no problem with Deslauriers playing when Toronto has Reeves in the lineup. Sure…he doesn’t give you points but when the other team has a nuclear option you need one too.

I don’t know if many who haven’t played realize how that affects the team. Knowing you have a guy who can neutralize that guy on the other side. I know people say…let him run around and we’ll let the PP be our enforcer….. it just doesn’t work like that (Flyers brutal PP not withstanding) ….

I don’t want to be that guy but…having played some relatively high level hockey I know the mentality in the room. No one wants to hit the ice knowing they’re outmatched in any facet of the game and that includes toughness. Why do players always praise low skilled but tough team first guys? Because it comforts them and they know that they are covered in that area.

It’s hard to explain unless you’ve been there and know. And it’s not something you can quantify through all these ridiculous analytics. But it’s a thing in hockey and always will be.

Deslaurier in the lineup doesn’t help on the stat sheets. But it helps a ton with the mentality of the team knowing they have that guy. Trust me. It’s like Linus in peanuts without his blanket. The blanket is useless. But Linus isn’t Linus without it. 😂

  7. If coots plays the other centers don’t. Addition by subtraction. Can’t play a guy 15 minutes just to win face offs.
