The Day After: Edmonton Oilers vs Montreal Canadiens – Discussion

In today’s Day After Episode I discuss the Edmonton Oilers victory over the Montreal Canadiens and much more! Connor McDavid led the way with a goal and an assists, Leon Draisaitl scored the game-winner and Adam Henrique scored his first goal in an Oilers uniform against the #habs.

Talking Points:
– Oilers improve to 41-21-4 on the season. They remain 5 points up on the Kings and 7 points up on Vegas with 2 games in hand.
– Pickard improves to 10-4-0, with a 2.25 GAA and .919 sv%.
– Goaltending + Masking recent 5v5 issues. Since February 26th the Oilers rank 15th in xGF%, and are riding a PDO of 1.05…
– Kulak-Ceci have been caved in recently. Stecher looks OK but you can tell he’s getting used to EDM’s system.
– Henrique’s first goal as an Oiler!
– Is the team fast enough for the Playoffs?
– Evander Kane’s recent offensive struggles (0 goals in last 14GP).
– Evan Bouchard becomes the first Oilers defensemen with 50+ assists in a single season since Paul Coffey

  1. Bouchard has made some great defense plays. His urgency leaves a lot to be desired. That's his style. He's confident his puck handling skills will prevail

  2. Stecher seems to have had a good game based on the box score. 3 blocks, tied with Ceci. Even +/-

  3. During the 16 game winning streak the Oiler's were struggling on offense. There's a lot of room for improvement. The ceiling is high

  4. Need for speed. Broberg, Holloway, Stecher might be needed vs fast teams like Colorado.
McLeod and Kane can move around the top 2-3 lines for added speed depth where needed

  5. I have this Oilers theory.

Knobloch has fundamentally changed this team (along with the assistance of boys in the back office) to push the Oilers to play similarly to that of an Eastern Conference team.
We had gone from the high flying, offence and grinding defence to more formal structured play we see similarly to more teams out East. (NYI, NYR, & CAR for example.)
This means we have lost a lot of speed (also in part to picking up more aged players as of late) but we havent quite yet fully committed to defence first hockey leaving us in this weird middle ground in which we play low event hockey but dont do anything particularly well. Goal tending still does have some questions, and rightfully so but for the most part, they appear to be on the low end of our problem.

Structure and composition appear to be our current issue.
Small tweaks like putting a puck mover like Stetcher with a player that likes to jump up on the rush like Nurse I think is a good idea.
I would swap Ceci with Vinny once hes ready to go as well. Lets face it, hes played his way into the lineup this year.
Carrick has been doing great for a 4th line centre, but I would like to see some restructuring to add some speed and bite to the bottom 6 still. (Perhaps a Holloway call up eventually.)
    Chemistry Chemistry Chemistry, build it!

  6. This Oiler team reminds me of my golf game…. when I play on a real tough course, I can shoot in the middle 70s….give me a goat track, can't break 90. I think I lose concentration in wide open courses such as "Fort in view" or Millwoods ( don't mean to offend either one)

Same as the Oilers, maybe they lose focus, not sure. They'll be alright in the playoffs… I'm confident.

  7. We need the team to play better but how long has it been since anybody's said goaltending is the reason why Edmonton's winning? Lol Deadly team if we start firing on all cylinders

  8. The team's identity should be to use whatever style of play is necessary to win each game. Because each game is different, every period of hockey is different, and every shift is different. They must maintain an awareness and flexibility while playing, so they are able to shift gears successfully, and adapt (or dictate), so they get to the finish line with the lead.

  9. Oilers still "coming along". Hard to see them getting past either the Avs or Vegas. Pickard is better then Skinner by a bit, and it bothers me that Knob seems to think he's just a backup.
