Maybe he just need a week to reset his body since he hasn’t played a full season in 2 years

Coaching to deliberately try to get your players to hate you isn’t something a team trying to establish a long term identity should he doing

Idk part of me thinks this is just management thinking the dude needs to rest because it’s his first full season in years. I imagine there’s at least been some communication at this point, but it has to be related to just keeping Coots somewhat fresh for the push to the finish line. Otherwise, why make him a C if his play was shit and you were about to bench him?

Should I underreact? Or should I overreact. Or should I watch the rest of the leagues fans on r/nhl freak out. I don’t know what I should do.

Yeah, I hope Coots got whatever explanation he needed at this point. The first one was clearly just about play not being good enough. Hard not to read this one as a reaction to his comments, even if it’s not one, and if they’re still not talking, this will go sour very fast.

I’m really not sure what to make of this. It’s an odd situation.
I can’t blame Torts if he wants to change things up by scratching a slumping player, but the lack of communication is alarming. Why play mind games with your veteran, new captain at this point of the season? It just feels like this is Tortorella’s only card that he knows how to play.

Torts heard all of the media throwing a fit and said
“I’ll do it again!”

I think alot of fans forget that through his career coots has never been a high end offense talent. His calling card has always been a good two way/transition player with exceptional faceoff and defensive prowess. He had 3 outlier years in 2017-2020 but career wise hes only historically been a 40ish point scorer. Hes just under a massive microscope now with the C on his jersey n that contract he has. Hopefully these games give him a little wakeup call though that he needs to be a little better offensively

The team was noticeably faster and played to Toronto. I would keep it going.

Maybe they shouldn’t have prematurely given Coots the C. Dude didn’t play great all year. The beginning of the season, sure cut him some slack, but he never improved as the year went on.
4 solid years of 80-82 games played. 8 sub 70. He should have been a trade option not a captain.
This fall from grace is going to hit hard. He’s getting outplayed by Laughton, Phoeling, and Deslauriers.

Coots has been bad.
Got benched.
Coots complained about being benched.
Coots agent complained about being benched
Flyers won and looked great doing it
Coots gets benched again
Call me nuts but I feel like I can see the reasoning here. But now that it’s been TWO games we’re gonna hear rumors and trade talks and “front office disconnect” for MONTHS. Here we go again.
