New York Rangers and the Boston Bruins tonight I’ve long held that this should be one of the NHL’s big rivalries you see Boston New York rivals in baseball football basketball it’s kind of not been the case as much in hockey and we’ll get into that more here in a moment first

Between these two teams uh they could meet again in the playoffs but it would not be until the final round or the final round in the Easter conference now this of course is the NHL’s extension of the Boston New York rivalry which is very much present in baseball certainly football Jets

Patriots Celtics Knicks in basketball as well but the peak of this rivalry rivalry was really back in the 1970s uh where they met uh many times between 1970 and 1973 in the postseason uh back in the day very few teams the Bruins beat the Rangers in

1970 on route to a Stanley Cup win over the blues that season then they made it to the Stanley Cup finals in 1972 but lost to the Rangers in a six-game series in the Stanley Cup Final then they lost the following year 1973 in the opening round they did not play

Again until uh 2013 in the postseason they had a bunch of series back in the 20s Boston beat the Rangers in the 1929 Stanley Cup Final uh they lost to the Rangers the year prior but beat them on route to a Stanley Cup Final loss to Ottawa in 1927 ancient ient history at

This point um in 1939 they beat the Rangers on route to a Stanley Cup Final win over the Toronto Maple Leafs but again they have not played in the postseason since uh 2013 when the Bruins won in the second round before sweeping the Pittsburgh Penguins and advancing to the uh Stanley

Cup Final that year against the Chicago Blackhawks that’s really where rivalries are solidified right is in the playoffs you can have um you can play a team like a hundred times in the regular season but until you get that playoff juice it really doesn’t hit uh hit the same and there

Not I don’t think there’s anybody from 2013 that is still on the New York Rangers br Marshon of course the only hold over there on the Bruins side of things uh the Rivalry kind of hit a weird bump in what was it 2018 or 19 when the Bruins traded for Rick Nash

From the New York Rangers sending uh what a first round pick and Ryan lingren in exchange lingren has always had uh seemingly a bit of a chip on his shoulder when playing the Boston Bruins uh he’s always mixing it up always getting into things I believe he might

Be injured at the moment so he won’t be in the lineup uh tonight but where the Rivalry could really reignite is in the playoffs think about great rivalries in recent history the one that jumps out of course is the Colorado Avalanche and the Detroit Red wi some epic series there uh the

Penguins capitals had the series several years ago um Boston Montreal had a bunch of playoff showdowns earlier this century and of course in 2011 on route to the um Stanley Cup uh win there uh you think of Boston and Vancouver Boston and St Louis more recently if the brw

And Rangers are able to advance to the Eastern Conference Final I think that would be a great thing for hockey to have two of the biggest oldest best markets facing off against one another that would really reignite this rivalry and um you know it’s a bit of a long
