Thatcher Demko Signs Five-Year Contract Extension with Canucks (Apr. 08, 2021)

Vancouver Canucks General Manager Jim Benning announced today that the club has signed goaltender Thatcher Demko to a five-year contract extension. The contract will carry an annual average value of $5 million and will run through the end of the 2025.26 season.

“Thatcher is an important part of our team,” said Benning. “He’s taken a big step in his development this year, displaying a strong work ethic and composure in his game. At every level of play Thatcher has excelled, from college to the AHL and now as a starter in the NHL. We are excited to have Thatcher be a key contributor to our long-term success.”

Demko, 25, has appeared in 25 games this season, posting a record of 12-12-1 along with a .917 save percentage and a 2.77 goals-against average. He made 27 saves to record his first career regular season shutout on March 1, 2021 at Winnipeg and won eight of his first nine starts in March, posting a .950 save percentage and 1.74 goals-against average during that stretch.

Demko has been named one of the @NHL ‘s Three Stars of the Week on two occasions this season as the League’s first star for the week ending January 31 and the second star for the week ending March 7.

The 6’4″, 192-pound netminder also appeared in four playoff games with Vancouver in 2019.20, posting a record of 2-1-0 to accompany a .985 save percentage and 0.64 goals-against average. He recorded his first career playoff shutout with a 48-save performance against Vegas on September 3, 2020, setting a new NHL playoff record for most saves by a goaltender in a regulation shutout victory.

A native of San Diego, California, Demko was originally selected by Vancouver in the second round, 36th overall, at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

  1. I like Pearson but 3.25 million is a bit much in my opinion, especially when you still have to sign Hughes and petterson and then boeser and hoglander in the near future

  2. You guys really think Benning doesnt have a plan to fit Pearson into this teams future? Cmon. Negative nellies. Know your role.

  3. Looking forward to the Pearson video. Excellent choice to re-sign him. I have the utmost faith in Aquilini and Benning to bring a cup to Vancouver. 👌🏾

  4. Demko is finally ready for the #1 spot and not bad of a signing 5 by 5 and today we just resigned Pearson to 3 years around 3 million or so

Just have to figure out how to sign Petterson and Hughes when they come up I see Lugono penalty gone probably with Sutter, Edler, Benn and Holtby so that will free up some money
