I like the Gold Plan but it is very difficult to be for real mathematically eliminated in any league, that I think there needs to be a different method for determining when the Gold Plan kicks in, or else teams will continue having long long stretches of the season where losing is in their best interest. A fair method for determining playoff odds is likely the best method, with teams collecting Gold Plan Points whatever point after the All Star Game their playoff odds drop below 1%.

I agree with your frustration for some apparent lack of effort from the players but I don't think the Gold plan is the instant answer. The whole premise of the draft in every sport is built on parity, lifting up the teams balanced on their need. The idea is that a team can only be bad so long until they are given enough advantages that they improve. The parity from the draft also gives fanbases hope that would otherwise only come from firings, a small chance to win something valuable in a fairly meaningless season. Tanking circumvents this and so does The Gold Plan. If competition becomes the only goal, then it would just be better to randomly assign draft orders rather than use a system like The Gold Plan that still circumvents parity, perhaps even worse than tanking because it is more palatable to the egos of the competitors. Personally, I agree with you, I don't think most professional athletes can be talked into tanking when it obviously goes against their financial interests and likely personal interests as well, but this lack of effort might just be the result of a lack of motivation when their short-term goals have become impossible and they haven't been able to transition their mind back to the long-term goals yet. Similarly, my coaches usually enjoyed the opportunity to make sometimes strange adjustments, almost tryout scenarios during any meaningless game time, even on these teams I didn't always understand the point that was being tested. To those on the outside of the decision making process, the choices look very different and losses may result because the goal IS the Stanley Cup….just next year.
They’re not tanking – confidence has been shattered. People want to fire the coach but he was already extended. So I hope the roster gets fixed this Summer. Maybe hire a new sports psychologist too.
