Julian McKenzie of The Athletic joined Tim & Friends to discuss Marc Bergevin’s comments on the Montreal Canadiens not matching Jesperi Kotkaniemi’s offer sheet and trading for Christian Dvorak.

  1. The habs strictly got better with the addition of Dvorak, heā€™s better both offensively and defensively than KK.

  2. Did KK ever say to someone he needs more development or did the Canadians let someone who would turn into a needy player that is not able to reach their potential and blame others for it go. Canadians got a solid player with Davorak, Drouin will be back strong and they get great draft picks in the return. Canadians did not pay a kid who is not worth the dollar amount. I can't see how Carolina is seen as the winner in this deal when they give up draft picks and overpay an unproven player.

  3. "bergavin opened the door to acknowledging that their might have been some mishaps with KK"
No he didn't. Also, listen to yourself. That's the wackiest quote I've heard in a while.
Sorta maybe could of opened the door sort of maybe???

  4. The Hurricanes have a lot of faith that KK won't suddenly decide to let his existing contract run out without an extension. Meanwhile, KK is now the third highest paid player on the 'Canes, and I doubt that will sit well in the dressing room. Quite a few good players there who aren't making what KK is. I'll guess we'll see how it pans out.

  5. Carolina is the biggest joke in NHL….. They lost two of their good players to give KK this money….this will not turn out good for them…. revenge never pays…

  6. I feel like everyone won. Arizona with the picks, Montreal with the proven center at a friendly contract, Carolina with the Finnish prospect. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø Iā€™ll miss KK and wish him the best.

  7. Montreal was in a tough spot.. we had NO center back then, Drouin needed to play center and so did KK even at his young age….. It's a shame, but you make do with what you got. Carolina aren't smarter here, they say they are putting KK as a winger cause guess what, their center lines are stacked. His developpment won't be any better in Carolina, will be worse!

  8. Great move by Bergevin. Best trade he has done in his Habs' career as GM. Bigger than getting Weber. The Suzuki trade may be 1a. and this is 1b. This makes the Habs better and KK gone is good riddance from a player who did not want to the there.

  9. Why all the talk of KK's poor development??. Perhaps it's more of expecting 3rd overall talent out of perhaps a fringe top 15 pick. This kid was never going to be that good. We all know by now it was more of a need pick and when you draft for need this is what happens.

  10. Bergy has convinced me over the last few years that he is a genius. Tremendously shrewd, opportunistic, and decisive. GHG

  11. 1. Christian Dvorak is an improvement of KK. We are excited to see stability with Suzuki and Dvorak down the middle.
    2. KK said the Hurricanes are going to help his development… Meanwhile the hurricanes have announced that he will be playing on the wing. He is NOT a good winger… He lacks agility, and speed. Often get knocked down near the boards… He will end up on a 3rd line.
    3. KK had the same problem as Galchenyuk. EGO… I don't get it. You're 20 years old… it's okay to be benched or sit in a press box so that you can clear your mind and maybe watch a game or two, to get you out of a slump. You literally scored the next game… You probably wouldn't have played as well if you weren't benched.. and that's the consistency problem you have shown throughout your 170 gp…
    4. Maturity… Dvorak is going to be surrounded by some great wingers. He has the maturity to handle the pressure of a 2nd line C in Montreal and understands the expectations. KK was crumbling under the pressure and only played his best when he was trying to "prove a point" to the management.

I wish him the best, but if he doesn't mature and put his ego aside, he will end up the next Scherbak and Galchenyuk. Getting paid what you're worth is fine. Holding out for a little more money is fine. The fact that he didn't want to take a bridge deal, help his team, earn his salary shows more about him than he thinks. If you were so sure of yourself, you would have eventually earned the raise and gotten paid the big bucks… Carolina looks so stupid.

  12. Dvorak is a great player. By the way, nobody wants Jack Eichel. Great comments from Julian.

  13. it'd be about time they learn, after screwing up with so many first rounders, two third overalls especially. every time they drafted out of desperate need instead of picking the best player available it backfired (McCaron, Tinordi, Galchenyuk. KK) and everytime they brought in an 18 it backfired (Galchenyuk, Mete, Latendresse, KK).

  14. What will they learn??ā€¦that he didnā€™t develope faster? He had more than an opportunityā€¦lets all save our tears nowā€¦

  15. Habs management hasn't learned anything. Galchenyuk, anyone? The Hab should trade away all their draft picks. They couldn't develop a picture even if they had all the right chemicals, paper and the negative. They are incompitent. If you're not NHL ready, stay away from these clowns. Keep treating high draft picks like crap and they will refuse to even report. Asses.

  16. Okay a kid was good enough for a certain coach and had good times and harder times… so now they are suppose to learn from that… its sports… okay so he would be in the minors bitching fans bitching and he would have not a 6 millions contract… the truth is that Carolina overpaid for a player that is not that great..

  17. KK was the wrong pick from day 1, should have been Brady. Bergy made the best of this with the 2 pics, now Canes have a project to work on!

  18. Julian: "Maybe the Canadiens have learned from this…"
That was a lesson for Marc 10 years ago. It was never on this scale, but I can't remember a time when I didn't hear this very same thing every few years.

  19. Drovak makes Montreal better as a whole down the middle for the now and the future. People look at and say Drovak isn't that good but he's really really good player was one of the best players on Coyotes. He will hit between 40 50 points. Drovak will fit nicely we have better wingers than Coyotes Drovak will have his best year in NHL this upcoming season Mark my words.

  20. Some ppl or most ppl think Danault is a third line center at best, to me I really believe he's a second line center at best, he had two seasons where he had around 50 points, they Drafted KK because they thought Danault was a third line center, if they had thought Danault was a second line center then they would have drafted Brady Trachuck whose a winger and was considered one of the best players in the draft or the best player but the bottom line is that in the first round or maybe second round you draft the best player available and then after the first and second round you draft based on positional needs because that's someone was saying and it's true but the player they draft is what it is there is no going back, they drafted KK based on positional needs and not the best player available.

  21. Enough with the boohoo about how KK was handled damn…Look at CC a 15th pick and he chose to thrive with a more subtle route! CC made his calculated choice and KK made his! KK said at 18 I'll do my best to make the roster chasing that $$$ and not say I'll go back to Finland to further my development….That was on him and his contract greedy agent…Even then, KK was a 3rd overall draft pick, picked out of necessity and not based on a central scouting rank…He was and is destined to be a bust with his overlooked skating mechanics…The kid skates like a giraffe ffs! Enjoy that 6.1 while it lasts kid šŸ‘ I'll never see that much lol jmtc

  22. When people play in Europe, it's still professional hockey. OHL is junior league. European top prospects play in full professional league, making decent bank.
