Why Boudreau is so confident Ovechkin will hunt down Gretzky

Bruce Boudreau coached Alex Ovechkin in Washington for parts of five seasons and was behind the bench for Ovi’s first two Rocket Richard Trophy wins. With Ovechkin 46 goals back of Wayne Gretzky for the all-time scoring crown, Boudreau joins That’s Hockey to explain why he always believed Ovi would break the record.

  1. As he should be. The numbers are fairly well in his favor by this point. And even if he isn’t there by the end of his contract, if he’s close he’ll probably do another season just to get to it

  2. Ovechkin is born in September, so he would still be 40 if he retires after the 2025-26 season.

  3. You can never doubt Ovi. He just proves everyone wrong, eventually. They said he wouldn't win a cup, until he did.

  4. The reason why Ovi was slow at 1st half of a season was upper body injury, only after AllStar games he slowly started to get back his game again.
