No suspension for Matt Rempe

New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe faced consequences during a recent game against the New Jersey Devils. Following an illegal check to the head of Devils forward Nathan Bastian, Rempe received a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct, resulting in his ejection from the match.
Frank Seravalli’s tweet this morning revealed that the Department of NHL Player Safety opted not to suspend Rempe. Peter Baugh, covering the Rangers for The Athletic, confirmed Seravalli’s report, indicating that there would be no hearing and consequently, no suspension for Rempe. #hockey #nhl #nhldiscussion #highlights #nhlhighlights #newyorkrangers

  1. Contrasts? How the heck do you compare this to Morgan Reilly who hunted a guy down after a whistle and intentionally cross checked a guy in the head. Subscribe? You’re incompetent.

  2. Too many players are coming up forgetting that hockey is a contact sport. Before automatic icing, clubs ran a ton of touch-up drills and YOU GOT HIT A LOT in practice. You realize quickly that you DON'T drop to the height of the dasher when a 6'7" player has you lined up! That's just insane. The call was insane too. No way was that a penalty. Hockey is NOT A FLAG SPORT.

  3. Clean hit. Everything was tucked in. Rempe’s shoulder is at the height of Bastian’s head. Perfectly legal hit and he shouldn’t even received a penalty for it.

  4. No suspension is correct, shouldn't have been a game misconduct, the guys a giant so he's got to bend down to hit, and he plays hockey as it should be played, this is not girl scouts, this is hockey and hitting is to be expected, I love this from a rangers fan, the 4th line is a beast now, and is potentially the game changer in every game, ive waited all season for this, Jacob for awhile seemed like he wasn't hitting like he used to, but I can see waiting till after all star break to start in on his tradition, checking, and now seems the whole team wants to check, establishing a real identity will be key for a cup this year.

  5. Getting a game misconduct under 3 minutes in is like being suspended a game. They probably thought that was enough. Glad they didn’t give any further punishment and that Bastian isn’t injured

  6. 1. It wasn’t an illegal hit.

    2. Throwing him out was ridiculous.

    3. Maybe they need to amend the rules to state that keeping your head down is a dangerous practice an people who cleanly hit you aren’t at fault.

  7. I thought that the principal point of contact was the head. I guess the league had a different view. Because the view I had, he lined up a player from distance and hit him in the head while in a vulnerable position.

  8. He was following through on hit…
He's 6'8, his shoulder is at a lot of players face level….
    Bastian had his head down…
Hit looked clean. Bastian was just unlucky that he seemed unaware of Rempe finishing his check and got caught in the face. Bastian was fine….
I don't even think Rempe should have been tossed.

  9. How is this dangerous hit not a suspension ? I am not a fan of either team but this was dangerous hit that could have ended the players career . The NHL rule keepers are a joke !

  10. After watching video of the hit quite a few times, it's hard to come to any conclusion other than that the hit itself is clean. However, Rempe had multiple other options that didn't involve him choo choo training into Bastian, and I really thought for that reason alone he would get a game or two.

  11. Good glad that this kid rempe has come into the nhl and is forcing people to feel stuff and think hockey is a physical sport and lately and for sometime there has been too much sensitivity and it needs to get back to a more physical dynamic and they need to stop babying these guys bring back enforcers
