ESPN call of #60

The ESPN call of Auston’s number 60 was pretty cool.

  1. Man why does our SN coverage suck so bad. This is way better, I should just watch away feeds.

I live in the US and stopped watching Canadian broadcasts of the Leafs for every team except for maybe Boston. If I have the chance and it’s not Jack Edwards I’m listening to them. People who think it’s normal or okay for your home broadcast to be more celebratory when the other team does something are nuts and too afraid to call it what it is. It’s painfully obvious once you constantly see opposing broadcasts make bigger deals about Leafs plays.

So foreign to me a leafs fan would show this and not the Joe Bowen version

Is there anywhere to see the full game highlights with the ESPN feed? I’m always curious to hear it.

That was a ESPN national game I think, so there was no SN as a choice if you are in the US, they were very complimentary of the Leafs, they have to sell the game a little bit and who better than focus on #34.

In fairness, this guy was over the top for EVERY SINGLE SAVE the entire game. Love the energy, but either he’s never seen hockey before or is easily excitable. His co announcer didn’t really bring much to the table either. I like the local guys in Toronto, arguably the most knowledgeable about every matchup and players on the opposing teams not just the home team.

Almost as good as Joe Bowen’s call of it. I wish I had the option to watch the game with Bowen and Ralph. In the playoffs I mute the tv and play them on the radio and pause one other until they sync.

ESPN has generally been a mixed bag since re-acquiring the NHL rights but this was a bang-on call.

You think that’s better than Cuthbert’s call? Mate, this is shit. It’s just yelling… Matthews and 60. My five year old nephew makes this call every time Mo Salah scores – “MO SALAH!!!!” Actually he yells it anytime there’s a goal by anyone in any sport. But still.

A great call conveys information about the moment. It’s a time capsule that puts the achievement in perspective. A hardcore supporter isn’t stopping to listen to a call in the moment so the idea that the announcer is supposed to hype you up is just baffling to me. How tf are you lot watching games, alone in the dark with a muzzle on just waiting for someone to shout AUSTON MATTHEWS lol? Hell, even in Liverpool watching the replay in the morning with my morn barely started I’m making my own noise.

I could give a gazillion examples of great football calls but the iconic one for Canadian Hockey was the Golden Goal by guess who. If the Leafs ever do anything historic you’re in good hands and that call will resonate with you forever just like “SIDNEY CROSBY, THE GOLDEN GOAL. AND CANADA HAS ONCE IN A LIFETIME OLYMPIC GOLD”
