Was Nathan MacKinnon robbed of an assist and a home point streak? – Tough Call Review

Nathan MacKinnon had at least one point in every single home game this season…until now. Should he have been credited with an assist on this goal awarded to Devon Toews?

  1. This was 100% an assist. Mikko scored, not Toews. Mikko was the last Avs player to touch the puck. Mikko didn't say he didn't touch it. He just pointed and said "you".
The overhead view shows the toe of Mikko's stick hitting the puck. There's no way, the way Lindgren's stick was moving, that the puck would come off at the angle it did. Simple mathematics.

  2. NHL! When you absolutely, positively have to get it wrong… Accept no substitutes. This historic run ending in this fashion is downright criminal. "Call on the ice stands" is the right move but hell, I'd let Gretzky decide. Has anyone seen any comments from 99?

  3. I would think Mikko would get the goal since it looks like it was a rebound, and Mikko hit the other guys stick directing it in. But if you give the goal to Toews in the end, then that means Mac should get an assist since he assisted the shooters goal.

  4. Definite no point for mac. Own goal and no assists credited. Lindgren 100% trying to push that into shesty

  5. Not sure about the rules but Rantanen causes the puck to go in by pushing the defenders stick even though he did not touch the puck. So I would definitely award the goal to Rantanen. And it makes sense to give an assist for that. Really the only difference between this and Rantanen swiping the puck in himself is the defenders blade in between. So logically it is an assist.

  6. I disagree. It clearly looks like mikko forces his stick to hit the puck. And there is 0 follow though as a result. Defenders stick stops moving forward as soon as mikkos stick breaks contact. He did apply input to his stick for sure tho. Both look to be true. But we don’t know how it felt to Lindgren. The fact there is no follow through past the point of contact is the kicker for me.. but I know nothing about puck physics and very little about rules other than what you presented. Looks to be complete and what the deciders used. This is how I’d present it to the review team. Seems pretty clear cut to me that a case could be made for the momentum to be from mikkos stick and that’s enough for the assist. I’m counting it. Streak is on!! Haha

  7. Contact is made by the Lindgren's stick, but it is definitely propelled by Rantanen, and without that contact the puck wouldn't have gone in. This is kind of a grey area. I feel like they glaze over a lot of these and it kind of goes either way in terms of awarding assists or not, but this wouldn't be so scrutinized if not for MacKinnon's streak catching up to Gretz.

It's a good question to have the NHL figure out. Kind of like that Ovi goal a few nights ago. Where his stick touched the puck but his teammate shot the puck through the blade of Ovi's stick so Ovi was awarded the goal having never taken a shot. Which is weird.

  8. I don't see how you can call that as a shot by lindgren when mikko's stick clearly hits his, no one is pushing the puck back to their goaltender with enough force to do that unless they're being helped by another player

  9. As an Avalanche fan but one who appreciates objectivity, I appreciate your view of this. However, I would interpret the term "is shot" in the relevant subsection of the NHL Rules to require some greater degree of force on the part of Lindgren for that rule to apply – particularly considering that Rantanen's stick did make contact with Lindgren's. Thereby, the more permissive clause should apply in this case, and just for sequential reasons, I would have awarded the point to MacKinnon. The Rangers did not establish possession of the puck and the necessity for Lindgren's contact with the puck would not have arisen without MacKinnon's setup pass to Toews.

Regardless, it was a battle between two top teams – a potential Stanley Cup Final matchup – in which the Avalanche simply fell short. Sad to see the streak end, but I don't think this is MacKinnon's last opportunity for one like this.
