I was 12 when it happened. It did occur now long before Friends ended that year.
I was there
1. Leafs deadline rentals NEVER work out. '94 Conn Smythe winner Leetch got caught puck watching and let a red-hot Roenick walk in on a goalie he was intimately familiar with, having played with Belfour from 1988 to 1996. He knew Belfour went down early, which brings me to point number 2.
2. Belfour shoulda have had it. It wasn't exactly Yzerman drilling a 100+. MPH slap shot past Casey from the blue line.
3. Ed knew Roenick. He knew J.R liked to shoot high glove side. So why the hell did he go down so early, when J.R. was still winding up? He should've stopped it, period, and Leetch shouldn't have been puck watching. We traded for Leetch at the deadline so he WOULDN'T pull such an amateur move.
4. These nostalgia deadline trades need to end. Mike Foligno was a fringe player who wore a ridiculous bicycle helmet and scored just ONE important playoff OT goal during his entire tenure as a Leaf. So what does Dubas do? He gives up a 1st rounder for Nick Foligno. And don't gimme that "but he was playing hurt!" bullshit. Playing hurt hinders your team. It does not help it. In 7 regular season GP after the deadline Nick scored 0 goals and 4 assists. He scored O goals in the playoffs and notched one assist, all because Dubas made a nostalgia trade. We gave up a 1st rounder for 5 freaking assists. Easily Dubas' worst trade. The only pklayer I can. think of that gave less to his team is Ville Leino to Buffalo. We traded John Michael-Liles for Tim Gleason but at least Gleason scored a goddamn goal along with his 4 assists in 39 GP in a Leaf sweater. Gleason also w0on a Leafs-Bruins game on Jan 14 2014 by first blocking a shot with his legs, then blocking a shot with his BALLS. He went down like a sack of potatoes. I don't think his jock was lined up properly.
5. Ryan O'Reilly performed well but he high-tailed it out of town on 12:00:01 on July 1.
6. Other deadline busts include Owen Nolan, Brian Leetch, Aki Berg, Ron Francis, Glen Wesley, Tomas Plekanec, Brendan Leipsic, Mark Fraser, Carter Ashton, Aaron Voros, Luke Schenn (I am baffled as to why fans think this guy is good. He sucked during his first tenure, he sucked even more during his second (he notched one regular season point and one playoff point. What do people see in this guy? He SUCKS.) And we traded Antti Suomela for a guy who notched 1 measly assist in 13 GP, Alexander Barabanov.
7. Alex Galchenyuk cost the Leafs a playoff game they should've won with a giveaway so brutal, it's almost as if he was a duble agent on the Canadiens payroll. I don';t think I've seen a giveaway so awful in my 3 decades of watching hockey.
8. In conclusion: THE LEAFS FREAKIN' SUCK AT DEADLINE TRADES. ALWAYS HAVE, ALWAYS WILL.
9. "Maybe this year will be different." Probably not though. In order to win, your best players need to play like your best players. In the Matthews era, every single star on the team plays noticeably worse after Game 82. Not ONE player steps up. They ALL play worse than they do in the regular season. They shoot less, score less, defend worse, allow more goals, shy away from hits. Yes, they won last year's series versus Tampa Bay but they didn't play very well. They deserved to win at least. ONE of those Bruins series, but Gardiner played the worst Game 7 I have ever seen a defenceman play, and Kadri got himself suspended not just once but twice. I love my team, but I don't understand why they play SO much worse in the playoffs. But hey, "maybe this year it will be different," though they've given us no reason to believe so. Round 2 was over in the blink of an eye. Marner played one good game, I'll give him that. The rest of the core? Were they really so tired from playing ONE series, knowing the NHL playoffs is a four series tournament?
I guess we'll see. Don't get yer hopes up boys. And girls. And those who identify otherwise as part of the LGBTQRDSATHVFHHJOKNAHY&%^ community.
