I was tracking Petey’s stats after his first 300 NHL games and thought I would keep track after 400 games. I’ve also updated Quinn’s stats after his first 358 NHL games. This is comparing Petey’s first 400 NHL games to other NHL stars after their first 400 NHL games. As before I added a section for some NHL stars who haven’t hit 400 NHL games yet. And Finally I included past/current Canucks stars after their first 400 NHL games.
Before Petey’s mini-slump he was tracking close to Stamkos’ 1.05 pts per game rate so he has slowed down a bit.
After 300 NHL games Petey was at a 0.98 pts/g rate. And Quinn was at a 0.85 pts/g rate after 258 games.
Anyways I know Petey could be better recently but it’s nice to have a historical analysis comparing what he’s done at 400 games to other stars during their first 400 games. Thought some of you might enjoy this.

Pettersson has earned his contract. It’s just frustrating to see him go through periods of time where he looks like a shell of his top form. I’ve never seen a player that can dip so dramatically in confidence so quickly and look so awkward on the ice. But he’ll put up 80-100pts/season so who TF am I to judge… lol 🤷♂️
I always knew Sedins were late bloomers, but Petey, as far as point production, is miles ahead of them at the 400 game mark. This just shows me that Petey’s prime should be some fun times!
Hughes puts up 85 points: oh dear oh gorgeous
Pettersson puts up 85 points: you fucking donkey
Wow, all that with only a single minute per game.
Hughes is unreal.
Benning was not great but at least he set us up with a #1 Centre, Dman and goalie.
Petey is very good but Huggy is just dominant out there especially this season. Against Arizona Huggy looked like he was a man playing against boys, he could skate anywhere he wanted while everyone else could only watch.
Points bring some perspective into the conversation but at this point there should be no doubt that Huggy is the more valuable player. The massive turnaround of the Canucks is in big part due to how he has carried the team on his shoulders this season and how much he’s embraced the captaincy.
Thank you for posting this.
A lot of people knock Petey because he doesn’t score his points in a super dynamic way and people think he’s not on par with the best in the league.
Charts like this show how laughable that thinking is.
Through his first 400 games, he’s out scoring:
Kucherov
Pastrnak
Draisaitl
Mackinnon
Additionally there are only 7 active players who are above him (Crosby, Ovechkin, McDavid etc…)
No Question.
Petey is Elite.
All I am getting from this is Petey needs to shoot the puck 1000000000000 more times a game.
That is an insane stat. We are very blessed
Haven’t seen this discussed before (maybe it has) but I assume that Tocchets system is probably neutering some of Peteys dynamism whereas someone like Miller who is more powerful doesn’t look like he’s changed much.
I’m totally a layman though and I wouldn’t be able point out anything specific but that could be part of the explanation of why Pettersson doesn’t look as ‘elite’ as previous seasons
