Sportsnet being Toronto biased? I thought I’d never see the day.

  2. cyclingnutla

Yeah, go figure. You think they’d be ok with the whistle because it involved Matthews.

  3. PositivePrimary8773

As if they never gave us enough reason to hate everything Toronto

  4. EAmicrotransaction

1 minute before this Crosby got chopped in the face and the call was revoked. The leafs announcers drive me nuts.

  5. Environmental-Meat36

Looks like the leafs are trying to take Crosby out.

  6. keeperpars

Home play-by-play makes a homer call? Say it ain’t so!

Isn’t tonight’s game a regional broadcast, not national? I figured a regional/local play-by-play team had a bit of leeway to say things that skew to the home team.

Edit: I agree the play should have been stopped due to both players being slow to get up

  7. Defiant_West6287

Compare this with Owen Power yesterday who took a puck to the face and was laying on the ice bleeding for an extended time while the refs refused to blow the whistle. Not sure which is worse but it’s time for some accountability from the referees, who are showing bias in the gambling age.

  8. God the Toronto announcers are the fucking worst. Probably responsible for 70% of the hate the leafs get.

  9. hellodbone

    It was incidental contact.

I don’t know if that whistle was for Crosby, but that was a VERY quick whistle for a play that really didnt even require a whistle.

  10. What a dumb fucking post. Firstly, the whistle had gone multiple times in the last few minutes before this, all from plays involving Crosby. You’re purposefully leaving out context. It was honestly getting tiresome at this point with the multiple stoppages.

Secondly, the players were down but neither look to be in a great deal of discomfort or pain. I’ve seen players clearly way more injured than this and it takes WAY longer for the whistle to go, often times not until the team with the hurt player contacts the puck.

Thirdly, the Sportsnet commentators are ANYTHING but homers for the Leafs. If you think you can tell that a commentator is a homer from this 40 second clip, you’re a moron. The Sportsnet broadcast consistently leans so far away from being homers that our own fans hate the broadcast because quite frankly they come across as haters. Even on questionable calls against the Leafs they’re like “clear penalty there”. And yes, the play before this was the reviewed high-stick which ended up being no penalty against the Leafs — and the commentators even said they thought it was a penalty just not a 4-minute.

  11. southpaw04

Here’s the thing sportsnet is dogshit so who cares.

  12. VegitoFusion

They’re not wrong. There shouldn’t have been a whistle

  13. Wyldling_42

This is such bullshit and so targeted against Crosby, and I’m not even a fan of the Pens or Crosby. The videos of hits so far, and the egregious non-calls….ffs this is not hockey.

  14. spenwallce

I tried watching the sports net broadcast for this first time and now all of the times leafs fans bitched about jack Edwards are soooo much funnier

  15. SilkyBowner

Simpson is a fucking moron. This is not new

He says dumb shit like this every broadcast

  16. LionBig1760

Sid would have gotten up if a gold medal or Stanley Cup was on the line, and so would Matthews.

The whistle was so quick that the ref didn’t even give them an option to try and get up.

That being said, the commentary was fucking cringe hearing them try to pin that quick whistle on Crisby being the one on the ice. They were both down, and right now, Matthews is more valuable to the NHL than Sid. Toronto fans and commentators acting as if they’re a victim of Crosby favoritism here is laughable.

  17. Gahockey3

Is everyone forgetting that literally last pens game accidental contact happened that led to ERs taking a ref off the ice? It makes complete sense when you see how Mathews goes down face first. I’m all for full contact hard hockey but common sense tells the ref right there “hey this may have been bad.” And blows it dead since either team touching the puck means possession is had.

  18. Mrdean2013

That color guy for these leafs SN games has always been trash. Nevermind his bias, his analysis is worse than that of John Madden’s. At least John had personality and charisma. This dude has nothing.

  19. -super-hans

They had just blown the whistle for Crosby on the previous play too on another play where they wouldn’t normally blow it dead, thats why he said it

  20. Copernicus049

“now they are slow to get up” “are they going to blow the whistle every time Crosby gets hit?

Mathews and Crosby were still glued to the ice after an accidental collision that clearly took the air out of both of their lungs just away from the puck. I get you have a clear bias but come on. Mathews laid an accidental hit out that took 2 players out of the game off the puck. Not a penalty but a stoppage of play. That’s pretty damn reasonable.

  21. johnnyehgiver

Perhaps because both teams appeared to have an injured player and thought possible head injuries?

  22. Except 3 times in the space of 2-3 minutes the refs blew the whistle for Crosby. While one of them was a stick to the face that somehow the refs deemed the puck, the fact that play was stopped every time Crosby hit the ice was infuriating.

  23. SmokyRoach

Kraken fan here so wtf do I know but it looks clean to me. It looks like Matthew’s didn’t even see him until he was on the way down to the ice. It looks like Matthew’s view of Crosby is blocked until the last second.

  24. Oldredeye2

Why didn’t any Leaf crosscheck Crosby after that cheap shot?!?!?

    /s

  25. jfriedrich

Two players collide hard in front of the net and don’t get up immediately, Matthews with his head down on the ice.

Craig Simpson, for some reason: “why do the refs like Crosby so much?”

  26. RooblinDooblin

Chris and Craig suck. Chris tries to make missed shots sound like the Henderson goal, and Craig never saw a call he liked.

  27. OK but…can we talk about how Matthews fell for a minute?

    LOL

  28. Judging just by that clip, I can see how depending on the angle the red who blew it down was at, it could definitely appear both players made head contact in which case I think it was probably best to blow it down.

In hindsight with how it went after it was probably unnecessary, but I’d rather the refs consistently blow shit down where players could be seriously injured or in danger vs let shit play out.

Its a game at the end of the day and lives are worth more than anything else.

  29. BadInfluenceGuy

To be fair, he jammed his/leg, took a ” puck to the face”, not a stick, the puck first, then runs into a wall. Mans old you gotta give him a whistle.

  30. I think Crosby kind of falling after starting to get up makes it look like he may have been hit in the head?

  31. kingofmankind

That was the correct call to stop play. Both players looked like their bells got rung. The comment wasn’t the right call by the broadcaster. League should revise the high stick play as the humans face is actually a bit more meaningful than a puck that is teetering on the height line of high sticking. So what is the call if I smack puck out of the air where connection is above shoulder height and through the act of my follow through my stick then connects with a face. Play just blown down as I hit the puck first? Or a penalty?.

  32. Smart-Breath-1450

Commentator biasness in the NHL is just out of this world cringy.

  33. Low_Warning13

Dumb comment by the commentator. They both looked to be shaken up pretty bad. Good call to blow it dead incase someone needed medical.

  34. DirtDiscPizza

Whistle in the regular season never happens in the playoffs for the guy. He’s gotta be hurting… in his pussy. J/k, go pens.

  35. Zealousideal_Total50

It was true in his 20s he was a baby but he grew up I like him now

  36. Negative_Eli

I’m surprised nobody has brought this up yet but If a team has pressure the refs let the play continue. They do this so when a team has pressure on, the defending team can’t have players fake injuries to get a whistle. If there’s no pressure/ possession on the play and someone could be injured they blow the whistle immediately. That’s why they blew the whistle here and why you sometimes see dudes laying on the ice and they let the play continue. However If the player isn’t moving and looks seriously inured or they see them smack their head on the ice or see blood they’ll blow the whistle.

  37. smashed_potato91

Sportsnet has always had garbage commentary. Nothing new. There’s been days i question if they’re even watching the same game I am.

  38. It looks like Matthews made it look like he hurt himself what a faker

  39. Competitive-Strain-7

There were three whistles in a few minutes that involved Crosby. He got held rushing to the net which dislodged. He took what looked like a high stick to the face then the leafs gained possession on the delayed penalty (which there was no arm for but was rescinded after review). There was then this collision between Crosby and Matthew’s which arguably neither player caused, whom the panel blamed Matthew’s for, so it seemed he was into the mix. None of this was Crosbys fault but Simpson decided to call the refs out and it was pretty weird.

  40. CANUSA130

They just don’t want to hear him blubber for the next 10 minutes.
