Please follow along as Dr. Wilson gives his reaction to the mechanism of injury on this play.

  1. The injury could actually have occured in the first hit that he took behind the net earlier in the game. The second hit here then would have made it worse and that was when there were visible symptoms. The accumulating effects of brain trauma are the reason that they have the protocols in place now, and why with a player as important as Rantanen they'll want to err on the side of caution. Hopefully he's fully healthy before the playoffs start.

  2. I am wondering if Mikko’s head accelerates more during the collision than in ice contact. He was just turning his head as fast as he can towards Ekholm when Ekholm hit the head and pushed it otherway with 30 mph skating speed accelerated with lean. If it hit his Mikko’s head, should it be penalty?

  3. another nhl players would try to run over or try to paste mikko into the boards but ekholm stopped abit before hit bodycheck mikko

  4. I like your videos. I watched because I'm an Avalanche fan, I hope Mikko is okay. New subscriber, I will be watching more.

  5. Great analysis. The only thing I think you might be off on – although to your credit you did emphasize the word "minimum" – is the 5 day return-to-play opinion. I got elbowed in the head during a game 23 years ago and I've never fully healed. I believe I was knocked unconscious by the elbow and then my head hit the ice when I went down, so a double blow. But the same could be said here, (though severity is subjective), as Rantanen's brain would keep accelerating after he is stopped dead by the hit and then receives a second collision with his skull when his head hits the ice. We'll see, they seem to get players back on the ice quicker now and I know they treat the neck as a contributor to post concussion symptoms but processing speed almost always suffers, at least somewhat and sometimes players are never quite the same.

  6. Eckholm sending a good message to Colorado – see you in the playoffs. Honestly Colorado looked like a minor league team this game, should have been 10-2 if it weren't for the goalie

  7. If the Avs meet Edmonton in the playoffs again, someone is gonna pay for this. If it's safe to lay a hit like that on our top line, the same is true for you. I look forward to Manson absolutely leveling McDavid.

  8. So what your basically saying is Ekholm got him with two solid hits, and the second one really knocked his brain around😳

  9. He hits the head and the head hits ice. It's a missed call, but Rantanen should also have been more careful and aware since he knew he was coming.

  10. At 1:33 on the video, you can clearly see Ekholm's left elbow driving up and into Rantanen's head. That is the initial injury from this hit, then compounded by his head hitting the ice. That elbow being thrown up is the dirty and unnecessary part of this play that led to a significant head injury. It's hard for me to believe that neither the refs nor the league seem to care about that high elbow.

  11. I'm an Avs fan, and this was a perfectly legal his by Ekholm. It was 100% Mikko's fault for breaking one of the foremost principles of playing ice hockey: KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!!

  12. really you think only 5 days? i was always under the assumption that concussions would need weeks after even being health again just to avoid further injury. not trying to call your judgment bad i’m no doctor, just my assumption:)
