I’m not a huge fan of ESPN’s analysis of the NHL, but I also don’t think there is that much wrong with where the Flames are ranked at the moment. I think you could make a case for them being a few positions higher, but it is not enough of a discrepancy to really worry about.
With that said, even being middle of the pack is pretty good for where the Flames are in their rebuild/retool. 8 draft picks in the first 4 rounds, with one likely to be a top 10 pick, should likely result in 3 to 4 future NHL players added to our prospect pool and boosting our ratings. With the players who are pending UFAs, and some who will be pending UFAs the following year, the Flames could have similar draft capital for the next few seasons.
To be honest, I’m really not worried about the direction of the prospect pool and I am more curious about how Conroy will be able to hold the team together for long enough that they can rebound on the expected timeline. This isn’t about necessarily winning games in the short run but it is about having enough good players in place that when the next-generation of the core emerges the team is in a position to be competitive.
