I’m really intrigued by Hutson’s style and how it will translate to the NHL.
His game revolves around deception – head fakes, eye position, dekes, and edges. I really wonder if he will have to make any changes to his game in a big way. Will his speed be enough to continue playing this way, or does he have to get faster? Does he have the strength necessary to engage in board battles, and win them? Will he be just a good transition piece or might show there is something much more? How does his defensive game matchup against pros?
This prospect has so much potential offensively and could be a massive piece to our young squad. His defensive game – gap control, transition timing, stick positioning, have all improved a lot this year.
However, these next two games are going to tell us a lot – a LOT more than your typical prospect. Not to say that if he struggles he’s a bust, but it will clear up these questions very quickly and show what he needs to/doesn’t need to improve on.
Edit: I’m not saying we should jump to conclusions or that these two games will reveal to us how he will pan out. What I am trying to say is, Hutson has a unique profile that relies on deception, fakes, and vision. How will those traits look in these games? I think it will show us something interesting because there has never been a player like him before that relies primarily on deception.
