Scottsdale Mayor David Ortega now says he’s OK with the Arizona Coyotes’ plan to build an arena in northeast Phoenix near his city as long it’s designed to prevent traffic issues in Scottsdale.

That’s a massive change in his position: One day before, he released a letter slamming the development as “not feasible, or welcome.”

The proposed project is about 100 acres of land near Loop 101 and Scottsdale Road, on the Phoenix side of the Phoenix-Scottsdale city line. The NHL franchise wants to turn it into a $3 billion entertainment district with restaurants, stores and apartments, as well as a 17,000-seat professional hockey arena.

The mayor all but reversed his strong opposition to the Coyotes project Tuesday, in a follow-up letter shared with journalists. In it, he indicated that he has no problem with the development as long as its main access point faces Phoenix, so as to keep traffic out of Scottsdale.

  1. All of AZ will suffer because of A-holes like him, and the people of Tempe – 'not in my backyard'.

  2. His bribe money must have been bumped up. What a two faced weasel. If you think something can't be f'ked up, just let the politicians into the room.

  3. Politics is a real hotbed in Arizona right now…and I’m not talking sports. I don’t have enough inside knowledge to know why they do what they do.

But I can’t see Morello moving forward with development of the property, especially to the scale proposed, on the prospect that a pro team might (or might not) make it there. The idea was that sports fan patronize businesses, not that business patrons take an interest in the sport. Or might that change?

  4. Coyotes fans were never given any thought in this process. The Coyotes move to Salt Lake City is the best thing for this franchise moving forward. The state of Arizona has no interest, but the state of Utah is waiting to welcome them with open arms…..

  5. Maybe he just had a change of heart.💰Something may have changed overnight who knows?💸Maybe he was confused at first but after a better explanation he became suddenly unconfused.🤑

  6. Not that his take(s) really tilted this one way or the other, but too little, too late, mayor. The damage has been done – and you’re a pinhead. 🙄

  7. Mereulo sells team to the league, gets instant cash to help develop his arena development and get more investors on board. The NHL gets out of the small arena that everyone from the board of governors to the NHLPA don’t like. And Phoenix gets the time it needs to build their arena. And down the road the NHL will expand to Phoenix and Atlanta, two markets Bettman still likes but needed new arenas and in Atlanta’s case, a new ownership group

  8. IT'S OVER!!!!!! STOP giving them false hope that the team can be saved in the final hours. Try again if this pipe dream gets built. Until a building is physically built there wont be a team in Arizona.

  9. The announcement that the Coyotes could be moving to SLC came the day after this dim bulb mayor ran his mouth, so it is likely that the NHL finally said "Enough!" and moved forward with moving the team. In the past few years, the Coyotes had looked at 27 – 27! – different potential arena sites in the Phoenix area, with issues being presented for all of them. I know the owner is the target of scorn right now, but it's obvious that the political class played a definite part in the team moving.

  10. He realized what Shang Taio realized…. Sports fans vote … and like Oakland did they made it impossible to stay and then claimed they tried so hard to keep the team….. enjoy your last term mayor

  11. The entire circu$ $hit $how was orchestrated by de$ign…. damage done… mi$$ion accompli$hed…. $alt Lake City $aviour$ to the re$cue!!

  12. As I wrote this morning on a different thread, it feels very much to me like the fix was in before this mayor ever opened his mouth. I think there were things in the Meruelo proposal that didn't really sit exactly right with the league and/or that there were other reasons why the league just decided that it was just more wasted time chasing a wild goose.

Speculating further, I'd be inclined to think that the release of the drawings might have been a last gasp, Hail Mary move to try to change Bettman's mind. As for this mayor's statement(s), it sounds to me that he was just unfortunate enough to have released his 1st one just as the league made up its mind but hadn't yet said anything public and his latest one is an attempt to avoid looking like the guy who scuttled the whole deal.

I don't think this mayor had anything to do with the team leaving. I think the decision was made before he ever spoke up and it's just unfortunate timing that he ends up looking like the bad guy. That's my take.

  13. The Mayor just realized how many jobs leave with the Coyotes, along with any associated entertainment revenue. Despite their lack of parody with other NHL profits, many local jobs are about to be severely impacted; bars, stores, restaurants, drivers, hotels, local media, etc, as well as the loss of additional philanthropy that comes with local sports teams.

  14. One possible scenario is Arizona ( after Houston and a team in the East ( probably Atlanta, although I think it should be Quebec City)), Arizona is next on the expansion or relocation list ( Winnipeg is certainly one to watch for. The Jets despite being a playoff team and in hockey mad Canada, have the lowest attendance in the league ( Arizona excluded)).

  15. Brodie, I love your content and I feel terrible for the real fans and die hearts but this is not a surprise this happened. Definitely surprising how it happened but not surprised it eventually happened. It's not like the A's situation where a entire fan base got screwed cause a Owner wanted out. This fanbase never showed up and had 30 years to figure it out. I'm not being negative if its true. There are more worthy markets (Quebec City) and markets that deserve a fair shot of their own (Houston, OKC, even Salt Lake) before Phoneix even sniffs another NHL. Give them a AHL team to prove they can handle it. I'm sorry to the true Coyotes fans cause that pain of losing your team never goes away. It sounds like i'm being mean but i'm just being honest.

  16. These are fantastic videos of the situation developing for the Coyotes, but it is not a hockey issue. It's an ownership issue. Alex Merruelo has alienated the people in the area with his inept ownership. Frankly, he should stick with the hotel and casino business. Gary Bettman should have found a better owner.

  17. it is easy to understand that flip, imagine all those pissed-off hockey fans voting him out of the office, also about getting an expansion team in AZ, I really doubt that will happen in the short term, divisions are balanced and would be a long time before NHL plan the next round, I think.
