Arizona Coyotes players were informed Friday that the team is relocating to Utah, sources told ESPN, confirming a report by PHNX Sports.

Coyotes general manager Bill Armstrong met with the players ahead of their game against the Edmonton Oilers to confirm what had been rumored all week: that the NHL has facilitated a sale to Ryan and Ashley Smith, owners of the Utah Jazz. The Coyotes will begin playing there next season.

The NHL and Smith’s group have been working on a deal, but sources told ESPN on Friday night that nothing was done yet, and there was plenty of work to go before the deal was finalized.

An announcement is expected next week, at the conclusion of the NHL regular season, sources told ESPN.

  2. It seems that PHX was nothing but a parking spot for an NHL team. Since the NHL pulled a franchise out of Canada why don't they relocate the team north of the 49th parallel?

  3. Bodies, love the video, you always give great content! And, to all the Coyotes fans out there, as a life-long Seattle Supersonics/Sonics fan, I feel your pain! To this day, I'll watch NBA, but it doesn't really matter because I don't have a favorite team.

  4. Alex Muruelo and Bill Armstrong did a wonderful job of dismantling the Coyotes! Absolutely devastated.

  5. The NHL shouldn't give a promise to the Marleo group for a expansion team as they have history of not paying lease in Glendale now more news from yesterday as they didn't pay Hotel bills. I truly feel bad for the Coyotes fans and the employees of the Coyotes because the ownership history of the Coyotes has run the team through a ton of lies.

  6. Seems pretty common sense to me as to WHY the Scottsdale mayor was against this: the strain on the infrastructure would have an adverse affect on the neighboring residents.

  7. You hate to say it but as a former Jet 1.0 and now a fan of Jets 2.0 i really don’t care if the jets 2.0 stay or go because its just a business and there to make the most money they can. I cheer for my team but also like other teams so if they go who cares.

  8. The reason the Knights are so loved here in Vegas is that they are Vegas Born. They are OUR team from OUR city, not some other place's leftovers. It sounds like Arizona may get to experience that when the NHL returns (assuming they ever get an arena built). This could be a good thing after all.

  9. Sounds like typical NHL. First it was the Flames to Calgary, now it’s the Coyotes to Utah. This happens about every 5-10 years in the NHL. The real question who is the next team to relocate?

  10. The Coyotes fanbase has been abused for over 20 years. Remember when they first came from Winnipeg, played downtown with Roenick, Ronning, Khabibulin and the boys? Zero problems.

I moved to AZ from San Jose before the transfer to Gretzky/Tocchet era. I bought season tickets for about 8 years, but couldn't believe how quickly the Great One turned this franchise into his personal litter box. Between Gretzky's changing of the Coyotes jerseys to look like his old Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds, to Tocchet/Janet Gretzky's gambling allegations, to the constant dangling of the team like a carrot over the fanbase. Not to mention, managing the roster as if they're the Charleston Chiefs. It's not a surprise to desert hockey fans. They got pushed and pushed until they couldn't take it anymore. If Sharks management did the same thing, you'd have the same result in San Jose.

The fanbase has been damaged and jaded for YEARS. Ownership has been similar to the Oakland A's. Every year has been a constant threat about leaving Arizona, and after a couple of decades, fans said ' You know what? Fine. Go". It's sad to see them go, but in all honesty: It's a necessary evil.

  11. Glendale is a prime example of why sports owners do not wish to pay for their own venues and why cities shouldn’t pay for these venues. With attendance and parking the Coyotes brought in less than half the amount of money projected each season. AEG the same operator of the Staples Center operates Gila River Arena and they know the only way to profit from an arena is by filling it up. That’s why the Staples Center has the Lakers, Clippers, Kings, and Spark. You need as many guaranteed events to make sure your venue is profitable. This is why multipurpose baseball/football venues made sense. Football stadiums do not make money, baseball stadiums do not make money. There are a select group of people who believe that cities should build stadiums for the teams. However, in the 60’s 1 stadium was built and the baseball and football team shared it. 1 arena was built and the hockey and basketball team shared it. This was pretty profitable. Today cities need 4 separate venues and none are profitable. Usually in the case of arenas, 1 is profitable like in Phoenix the Footprint Center is and the Gila River Arena is not. However, as we’ve seen over the last 20 years several teams have moved, because they cannot get their own individual stadium. Could you imagine the Sharks moving to San Francisco, but needing a separate arena and building it in the Presidio.

  12. what the hell happened with the glendale arena. how does the coyote mgmt. owe over 2.3 million dollars in back rent how does this happen. seems like we need to go after that cuban owner. this is BS . we shouldn't have to loose a hockey team because of shitty mgmt. everyone should sue that cuban owner supposed self proclaimed millionaire. put your money where your mouth is

  13. Disgusting that ownership can derail a franchise so badly that the NHL gets to relocate it 700 miles north to another part of the country, which also doesn't have a stadium ready yet… sorry yotes fans

  14. Utah hockey fan without a team I’m loyal to, I’m unbelievably pumped.

    Sorry to the AZ fans.

Going to try my best to support the team. Have to practice the use it or lose it mentality

  15. I don't feel bad for Phoenix, they treated this team like a red headed step child. 30 years and couldn't get it's act together, sorry, but not sorry. Utah will support them, time to end this drama in Phoenix every year.

  16. Bettman needs to grow a pair and force sale of the club to owners who give a damn about this hockey club. Current ownership is a sad joke and Coyotes fans deserve better.

  17. In hindsight , mereulo should have come here , purchased land & built his entertainment district with an arena before he purchased coyotes

  18. If they leave, they shouldn’t even try to go back to Arizona because if you could leave once you could leave twice look at the Los Angeles Rams, they moved from Los Angeles to Anaheim and from Anaheim to St. Louis and then back to Los Angeles.

  19. What a loss for the kids and the valley. The Coyotes provided a lot of community support and benefits that are going to be lost when they leave. Think of all the kids they inspired and money they donated.

  20. A community has to work with any team. No, they don't have to lay out tons of money for stadiums and stuff like that, but they have to at least make the team feel welcome. This mayor did everything to make them not feel welcome.
