[Leafs] We’ve signed defenceman Nicolas Mattinen to a one-year, two-way contract beginning in 2024-25

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the hockey club has signed defenceman Nicolas Mattinen to a one-year, two-way contract beginning in 2024-25. The NHL value of the contract is worth $775,000.

Mattinen, 26, skated in 52 games with the Straubing Tigers (DEL) this season. The 6’5, 215-pound defenceman lead the league in points by a defenceman with 46 (16 goals, 30 assists) and was named the DEL Player of the Year.

The Ottawa, ON native was originally drafted by Toronto in the sixth round (179th overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft.

  1. Jesus. Mattinen and Webber combined are as tall as an elephant.

Tre is a size queen confirmed

I ain’t mad about it though

Good for him. Drafted in the 6th round nearly eight years ago, deemed as another Mark Hunter big guy bust, and has now earned himself a shot. Don’t see this very often.

Last Leaf-drafted player to be DEL player of the year was Sergei Berezin, so that’s about what I expect from this guy.

Weird. He’s really come a long way since being drafted because this was a Hunter pick if I remember correctly. He didn’t show much promise coming out of London.

  6. Leafs are signing a bunch of young(ish) guys recently who I’ve never heard about. Lots of D-men. Intriguing

Just keep stockpiling as many D as possible. The forward outlook for the Leafs for at least the next 5 years is basically set and has superstar talent, the blue line is the only question mark as there has been a massive drop off between the 1st and 2nd pair, then the 2nd and bottom pair.

Eventually Leafs should get someone to stick like they did with found money in Benoit.

  8. Fun fact: Nicolas Mattinen was taken with the sixth-round pick that the Leafs got for trading Olli Jokinen to the Blues

  9. What a dichotomy eh?

Knew we would be moving away from undersized/overskilled but Tre has gone *hard* on the big bodies.

Is Tre just trying to build an entire lineup of only Matt people?
We got Murray in net (not quite yet, I know), this new Mattinen guy, and then Knies and Matthews.

Very cool story if he even plays a game with us.

That 2016 draft is largely considered a mega bust, which never made sense to me. Obviously we got Matthews, but Grundstrom and Woll are NHLers and Brooks has played games too.

If 3 of your draft picks play in the NHL, that’s pretty good IMO.

    Now, the 2017 draft… Yikes.

But Dubas didn’t have all winners either. 2018 only has 3 NHLers as well. 2019-2020 combined have yielded exactly 2 players that had NHL games. One is a guy who some people still claim is a fringe prospect in Robertson and the other is Abruzzese, who may not be an NHLer at all when it’s all said and done.

this seems kinda dumb. dude couldnt make it in the AHL so why not AHL deal and then sign if good? Kind of a waste of a roster spot.

    Anyway hopefully hes real good.

I think Brad has a type lol. More meaty boys on the back end apparently.

A friendly reminder to everyone, 2-way has absolutely nothing to do with waivers.

  15. The Leafs drafted Mattinen in 2016, he played three years more in the OHL and wasn’t very good, then went to USports, Austria, and Germany and now they’re signing him at 26? This is…weird. He should be a Marlies signing, not the Leafs.
