OA Interview: Roman Schmidt



Saturday, March 23rd marks the culmination of Roman Schmidt’s illustrious regular season journey in the Ontario Hockey League. Hailing from Midland, MI, Schmidt boasts dual citizenship of Canada and the US. Standing tall at 6’ 5” and weighing in at 216 lbs., this formidable defenseman was initially drafted by the Kitchener Rangers in the second round of 2019. Following two seasons with the US National Team Development Program, Schmidt joined the Rangers for the 2021-22 season. Over the course of 177 regular season OHL games, Schmidt has showcased his prowess with 21 goals and 69 assists, amassing a total of 90 points. Additionally, he has contributed significantly in 21 playoff games, notching 7 points.

Schmidt’s talent didn’t go unnoticed, as he was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2021 NHL Draft, securing an entry-level contract with the team. As he concludes his OHL tenure at the close of the 2023-24 season, Schmidt remains steadfast in his pursuit of a professional career in the NHL.
