FINAL Arizona Coyotes game: for now OR forever?

The NHL has never wavered about how it values the Arizona market. The league likes the population size, its television audience and its geography in relation to other U.S. teams in the Western Conference. There’s also been a significant youth hockey boom in that market during the franchise’s time in Arizona. NHL players like the Maple Leafs’ Matthews and Knies grew up rooting for the Coyotes.

Bettman has called the Coyotes “a victim of circumstance” when it comes to their struggles in the market, through ownership issues and their arena plights.

“We believe Arizona and particularly the greater Phoenix area is a good NHL market and a place we want to be,” he said in May 2023.

While leaving the door open for Meruelo to own an expansion franchise in a new arena was clearly a way to satisfy him in the relocation gambit, the fact remains that the NHL appears committed to bringing an expansion team back to Arizona. Bettman has been steadfast in saying that the NHL is not currently in an expansion mode, but cities like Houston and Atlanta are also showing significant interest.

  1. It’s almost like the Browns relocation… Arizona keeps the colors and logos and maybe the history like the Browns did when the original moved to Baltimore

  2. This isn't that bad, AZ will get their team and their favorite team owner back together again, in a brand new arena, better than ever in roughly 3-7 years.

    Its really win-win….

    Let's hear a big ol' HELL YEAH!!!…
…for the Arizona Coyotes: Part II….!

    On a side note…

Not all Coyote fans acknowledged the idea of losing them…there's a few people who have commented on this channel that have rejected the possibility, likely out of a really bad case of denial…they know who they are.

  3. For this to work The coyotes and suns need to come together and share a building under 1 ownership group. It’s surprising when bankruptcy was going on in 2009 that Jerry colangelo didn’t push for this. Wasn’t Colangelo the guy who helped the jets move to Arizona then they kicked the team out of their building a few years later. I don’t know the history with the suns and all but Hockey will be back.

  4. I hope this puts an end to all the uncertainty that revolved around the team during their stay here in Arizona. The players and team deserve better than what they've gone through under various owners and while they were ownerless. I'll be rooting for them. On the other hand, I can't believe NHL is talking expansion again. I recall watching when it was only the Maple Leafs, Canadiens, Bruins, Rangers, Red Wings and Black Hawks.

  5. Thanks for the coverage on this. I’ve been watching all of your videos since the news broke. I’ll miss my Coyotes….

  6. Reason stands that the Utah Grizzlies move to Phoenix. Unless, of course… 😃…"Alex Meruelo has been officially banished by Emperor David Ortega of Scottsdale (hereinafter referred to as "The David"). The David has "demanded" that hockey SHALL NOT be organized, played, or otherwise referred to within the Empire of Scottsdale, or even neighboring empires without His EXPRESS APPROVAL. And let it be further known that future aspriing "rookie developers" are hereby put on notice, and that PROPER FEALTY AND TRIBUTE SHALL BE PAID unto The David for any and all projects that would be accessible to the Empire of Scottsdale within one day by horseback…" Don't cross a demigod, folks!… 😬…I know Meruelo isn't exactly revered in Phoenix, but c'mon guys. He inherited a dumpster fire that preceeded him by decades, and was the first to actually try to put a viable permanent venue package together. The bills were paid in Glendale (late, but paid in full). So if the Coyotes own the building they're in, what in Hades does that matter anyway? You wanna blame somebody? How about the NIMBY hags in Tempe that treasure their landfill so much that they turn down a significant tax generator? What? You're surrounded by Bass Pro Shops and Cracker Barrels across the street, and somehow hockey is seen a pock on your town? Ladies?…Snobbery costs a lot of money to maintain. Just keep that in mind…And in closing my rant, I'd like to add a request to Meruelo or whoever reboots the Coyotes. For the love of all justice, please call them the PHOENIX Coyotes. I'm sick of sprawlburb envy and politics…

  7. The next 4 expansion cities should be Houston, Atlanta, Phoenix, and (to please the people that are gonna complain about those 3) Quebec City.

  8. Bettman still wants a team in Arizona. Phoenix's metro area is the 12th largest market in the USA at over 5M people. I think he pulled the plug for now because the $900M from SLC was on the table along with the Ryan Smith ownership group (which other NHL owners apparently love), the team could play at a decent size venue (Delta Center) starting in the fall, and a new arena will almost certainly be built in SLC for both the Jazz and the NHL team.

  9. MERUELO SUCKS! He has interest only in money. He never gave a damn about the fans. EVERYTHING HE SAID WAS BULLSHIT!
We want hockey! WITHOUT ALEX MERUELO! JUST SAY NO TO THIS WORTHLESS P.O.S.! After what he did, he should never NEVER OWN ANOTHER FRANCHISE IN THE VALLEY!
    IMO, MERUELO won't show up.

  10. As far as the reincarnation of the Coyotes go, first, there's no guarantee that Meruleo will win the land auction on June 27 – remember, it's the "highest AND BEST" bid, meaning if another party makes a proposal that is seen a superior to Meruelo's plan, that other group could win the land. Perhaps info has leaked that another bidder has a plan that the Scottsdale mayor (and maybe even the Phoenix mayor) would prefer….? Either way, the verdict is much less critical now.

  11. I went down to Tempe back in November for the Kraken-Coyotes game & found the Coyotes fans to be very welcoming & passionate. They don't deserve this at all & shame on Coyotes management for making this announcement at the last minute. If they had made this announcement a few months ago then it would have given the fans the chance to actually process this fully & then say their goodbyes in a gradual way. Instead the fans have to basically pay absolutely ridiculous prices to see their team play one last time & rush through their emotions while doing so. Hopefully the NHL follows the NFL's example with the Browns & and restarts the franchise in a few years time with a new arena & ownership group. In the mean time I fully expect MLS to announce in a few weeks that they are expanding to Phoenix in 2026 (which will cause its own set of problems when it comes to the future of soccer in Phoenix) to fill the void left behind by the Coyotes.

  12. I’ll give it a week from the date the sale is offish that an ownership group partnered with Shane Doan and Keith Yandle proclaims they are determined to bring a team back to Arizona in the future. It will go nowhere under the Merulo family, Coyotes fans despise him.

  13. the ticket cost is f'ing absurd , where were these aholes during any of the past seasons.
right , come out to our last game ..you could have bought a season ticket and supported the team,
for the price of your 1 ticket..

  14. Records and names get weird when they relocate. I hope when Arizona comes back they keep the Arizona records. It gets weird with the NBA. Some teams take the team and not the branding but their franchise records. Others give up the 'history' and take everything else.

  15. A new arena in Phoenix will see a team come back. The Coyotes never should have moved to Mullet arena. Should have had a back up plan for one of the other arenas in the area and not have put all their eggs in the Tempe basket.

  17. All for them going back to the desert at some point. I cannot imagine a situation where Mereulo getting to have another team is a good idea.

  18. How can the league just take the team away from THE OWNERS??? I mean, they own the team. It just feels weird & wrong. Like un-American.
