The New York Islanders Ended the Season with a 5-4 Win Over Pittsburgh, Now it’s Playoff Time

The New York Islanders closed out the regular season with a 5-4 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins in a crazy game that had a little of everything. Kyle Palmieri reached 30 goals for the second time in his career, Ilya Sorokin stopped Sidney Crosby on a penalty shot in the final minute and Ruslan Iskhakov made his NHL debut and picked up his first point.

We have our key takeaways from the game plus injury updates on Noah Dobson and JG Pageau and our hero and goat of the game.

Plus we start to look ahead to the Isles first round playoff rematch with the Carolina Hurricanes.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. In my opinion the PK has nothing to do with the players. I think it’s the scheme they play. I also think that the scheme will look COMPLETELY different next season. I don’t think l’m going too far out on a limb by saying both Doug Houda and John MacLean will not be back next season. Roy and Benoit Desrosiers will want to bring in their own guys and really get Coach Roy’s version of playing going. It made zero sense to let Houda amd Maclean go in the middle of the season.. I surprised Coach Roy had Adam Pelech dress for this game. Adam looks the tiredest out of all our players and I would have given Bo Horvat the night off too. But then again? Maybe Coach Roy asked them if they wanted to play or not and they wanted to play? It was good to see #38 playing, it was good seeing Bolduc playing. (That’s why it didn’t make any sense to me as to why Pelech played) But Coach knows best. Maclean is looking better and better every single game he plays and it’s going to get to the point next season that they can no longer keep him on the 4th line. He’ll be moving up to the 3rd line at some point next season because he’s too good of a player to be on 4th line. I do believe we’re going to see Barzal killing penalties too at some point next season. He has to, with his speed & our PK is horrible. Caroline doesn’t scare me in the slightest! Let’s go Islanders!

  2. Congrats to isktakov. 1 gp, 1 a, 1 pp pt. That will his nhl totals after he escapes back to russia and khl never getting a fair chance from louzer. As isles best producing ahl'er for two years ish rotted in ahl. Could have out produced that waste at forward 18 instead gets one measly game in nhl leaving nhl as a ppg player. Thanks louzer.
