Blows my mind how he could hit 69 goals and Toronto media is still playing into the heads of fans (and haters alike….. and probably even matthews himself) as his accomplishment being a disappointment. If he ended the year at 79 goals, they'd be doing the same thing.
34 is a threat to hit 70 every year potentially, if you knew he would never have another chance it would be a lot more disappointing but there's a good shot we see another season with a shot at 70 with this freak of hockey goal scoring.
If I were a Leafs fan I would not be happy….. not because he fell short of 70, but because on the doorstep of the playoffs that is where Matthews’ focus was. Kinda selfish.

I didn't like how coach was talking about him hitting 70 in the interviews and how it would take away from the overall focus of the team, just let the man and team play, no need to downplay the goal scorer like that…probably jinxed his 70 goals saying that

The difference between good teams and great teams is looking at these 2 teams Tor v Tampa……….Toronto good v Tampa great…..Leafs are like your minor hockey team with padding individual stats and micro managed by your coach v Tampa a group of players committed to each other in every aspect and a coach that does not baby his players…
what a coach calling the player that got them to the playoffs a distraction we don't deserve him and that coach should have been gone years ago and shanahan and to not put him out when they pulled the goalie was un fn believable
NEXTyear they should finally have some defence with 3 defencemen over 6'6 they might actually clear some players from the front of the net and maybe we can get a goalie seeing we haven't had one in 20 yrs you can count freddy but he wasn't good enough for t.o but he's good enough for carolina who would spank the leafs in a 7 game series

First of all, massive accomplishment cant take anything away from him.
However. Such a Leafs thing to:
– not hit a milestone on the final game of the season whilst playing all your stars in hopes to hit that mark, exhausting your franchise player.
– not hit the milestone yet remain on the meme-iest number (TD gardens gonna be playing summer of 69 if the leafs lose in 7)
– not hit the milestone after said franchise player (best goal scorer in the league) has an astounding number of shots on goal all game
