Rempe is clearly in the lineup because of Wilson. However, Wilson is on a line with Protas/Strome, and that’s been Washington’s best 5v5 line
as a result, if you’re putting Rempe in the lineup because of Wilson, and the only way that would have any kind of use is if Rempe is on the ice at the same time as Wilson (because obviously Rempe can’t do anything/can’t protect anyone from Wilson if he’s on the bench while Wilson is on the ice), then that means NYR will be putting Goodrow out against Washington’s best 5v5 line, which isn’t ideal
the best 4th line NYR has put on the ice in the last quarter of the season has been 26/22/21. Goodrow’s best play this season has been on Brodzinski’s wing. i get the whole hitting/deterrence stuff as why Rempe is in the lineup, but it’s a game of chess and the consequences of decisions like that have to be assessed. maybe this is just a Game 1 kinda thing but for the sake of controlling play, outside the intangibles stuff, they’re really better suited with 26/22/21, especially if Rempe isn’t going to be playing more than the 6 minutes he gets per game.
