There were signs, cheers, tears, a “Salt Lake sucks” chant and one last Whiteout inside Mullett Arena on Wednesday night as the Arizona Coyotes played their final game ahead of the franchise’s expected relocation to Utah.

As the buzzer sounded following the Coyotes’ 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers, tears were flowing as fans said goodbye to the team that has called Arizona home since 1996.

It’s been a long road to resolution for the Coyotes situation. There has been bankruptcy, the NHL taking control of the franchise, a threat to move to Hamilton, Ontario, several ownership groups, and a fight for a new arena that’s gone on for over a decade.

Through all that, there has been a loyal fanbase, hoping a resolution would mean a permanent home in Arizona, not the constant reminder that the team could move elsewhere. In the end, time ran out and the team will be playing in Salt Lake City, Utah, next season.

  1. incompetent ownership will no longer have the ability to lie, cheat and disrespect the people and fans in arizona

  2. The upside for Arizona’s future team is they no longer claim Winnipegs’s garbage past and they start fresh but the downside is they lose the talent the team has brought in during the rebuild.

  3. this is a bad thing and sets a dangerous precedent.

the NHL will contract teams, leave behind the "history ", logo, colours etc., and move them resembling expansion. team will have new name, colours, history, etc.

this may happen to Winnipeg and other teams like Florida.

the league will have numerous placeholder potential expansion franchises, while getting into new places.

all the while the number of teams will stay at 32.

  4. I saw this same thing happen in the NFL with the Browns… Cleveland got SCREWED. Now it's here in AZ… the Yotes are not the greatest team.. but the fans always get screwed…

  5. even as an impartial fan of the NHL on the East Coast, watching that final game and seeing/hearing how heartbroken the entire broadcast crew was, alongside the fans, broke my heart.

no matter how unstaintable that franchise was in its current state, the fans didn't deserve to see their own team quickly and abruptly snatched from them like that.

  6. The first bad sign was the 2011-12 season. Won the division. Made a run to the conference finals and were last in average home attendance. They were one of the best teams in the league during that season & couldn’t draw ants to a picnic

  7. 5 to 6000 fans just not enough to support an NHL team. Utah will average much more than that from the beginning

  8. I don't understand the heartbreak, I would fly down from Vegas to see the VGK play the Coyotes at Jobing Arena or whatever name they called it and the arena there was half empty and that's being generous. Now the team leaves and everyone is heartbroken? Shouldn't take 28 years to get your act together and then the team says they're leaving and everyone is a yotes fan, am I alone on this?

  9. For the folks in Canada who are still pissed off that the original Winnipeg Jets flew to the desert 27 years ago, and have taken a perverse delight in all the Coyotes' mishaps, I say that as an Arizona (at the time) I would rather have seen Phoenix get an expansion team rather than take a franchise from a fan base that cared deeply about them. I feel the same way about fans in Quebec City, who not only saw their team leave for Denver, but then saw that team win the Cup in their first season. (Although I can safely say that the Montreal Canadiens would NEVER have traded Patrick Roy to Les Nordiques.)

  10. Most nhl fans could see this coming for 15 years. Only bettman and toxic az. fans who believed the lies and broken promises couldn't see this ultimate demise coming. And bettman's stubborness to keep az. going got him played in the end and cost nhl a $ billion to go away.

  11. I just don’t see Salt Lake City working more than Arizona at all. As much as we criticized Arizona for their shitshow of ownership but I just don’t see Salt Lake City working.

  12. Utah Wingmen, Sugar Stingers, Honeycombers, Honeybears. Golden Eagles is cool but you already got Golden Knights. Wingmen referring to bees 🐝 and the hockey 🥅🏒⛸️ position would be awesome and it could refer to airplanes and chicken wings also. But you got Red Wings. 🛞⛸️

  14. NEWSFLASH: Alex Meruelo was on Burns & Gambo and stated that he plans on moving the Roadrunners from Tucson to Mullett Arena. Very risky IMO – you have a great fan base in Tucson for an AHL level team that you're going to take away from them (who thinks that will anger the loyal local fans there…?) and move them into a facility that used to be the home of an NHL team, making that a real step down for Coyotes fans in Phoenix. Lose Lose IMO.

  15. Utah will have a tough act to follow Seattle and Vegas in regards to both attendance and enthusiasm. But Arizona will never never never see a NHL team again

  16. The Coyotes owner treats his team like a casino, hence why he sold to Ryan Smith and then says he will have an arena in 5 years for the Coyotes to come back….maybe if he treated them like a team, this wouldn't be an issue….

  17. I really appreciate you and Shannon covering this relocation. Glad you guys collabed, would love to see more of it in the future!

  18. NHL fans: it’s obvious that Phoenix is not a hockey market, why does Gary Bergman insist on trying to make it work.

Also NHL Fans: the Coyotes are moving to Salt Lake, this is very sad for the folks in Phoenix.

  19. Its even more dumb how blind Utah is as next door my Colorado Avs have a logo of a furry foot well that's a Sasquatch foot and the Avs old mascot was a migit yeti so Utah would be trying to steal somn from a next door neighbor state go ahead be the Yetis the Colorado Avs will be your difficult rival real quick

  20. The mayor never thought that the NHL had a Plan B in place. He was stunned by how quickly the team was sold and moved to Utah. Fortunately for the mayor, the average age in Scottsdale is more than 10 years older that the US median, so most of the voters are more concerned about their blood pressure and regular bowel movements.
