The Canadiens and Maple Leafs seemed ready to get Game 7 underway, except the puck was dropped on the opening faceoff before Carey Price had his glove or blocker on.

The commentator has it correct. It’s NOT the job of the referees to determine whether the players are ready to play. The center needs to check before he gets set in the face off circle. The referee must check with the linesmen, the off-ice officials in the booth, and the goal judges behind the net. But not the players. That’s the centers job.
