Canes ride Andersen to series opening 3-1 win!

Frederik Andersen’s 33 saves carried the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-1 win as they grabbed the opening game of their best-of-7 Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with the New York Islanders. Evgeny Kuznetsov scored the opening goal within the first two minutes to give Carolina the 1-0 lead. His power-play goal snapped a 14-game goal drought. He would add an assist on Stefan Noesen’s 3rd-period goal that put the Canes in front to stay. Noesen, too, ended a long goal drought having not scored in the last 20 games of the regular season. As it turns out, the last time Noesen scored was against Montreal on the night that Andersen made his return to the lineup on March 7. Coincidentally, that goal was also the eventual game-winner. Martin Necas added an empty net goal to close out the scoring. Game 2 is Monday night at PNC Arena.

  1. I'll be specific for what I think we're not doing offensively. i'm not a hockey player, but i can't help but say that it seems like we we're glued to the boards most of the game. after i watched the canes, i watched boston and toronto, and it seemed like at least for the first half… any time a boston player was straddling up or down the boards, there was some kind of supporting player just a few metersyards off in the strong side slot looking to provide an outlet pass to get the puck out of the choke point. typically they orient their bodies up and down the boards so they can clearly see and make those center feed passes with more control and potentially with some sauce on it. and sometimes but not always, (F3) would play the weakside for a one timer, but most of the time they would support board play and the cycle, and just relegate to screening if they had time to kill.

But yeah, at the best of Canes hockey (especially before our last Toronto game we played at home) it seemed like we were doing a bit of this each play, constantly finding opportunities in the slot. I don't know why we're glued to the boards so much now, but my guess is we're missing the center feed which helps get some playmaking going. i see this a lot with checking lines that dump and chase, since they get behind the net… the center feed is usually only found in one or two places unless they're assisting the boards. it works a little less behind the net because players can cut the pass off at the choke point beside the net real early. but maybe up the boards, there is more room to generate those kinds of passes.

  2. I'm pretty concerned after game one. If that's what we're going to play like, we're going to have a short playoff run. Defensive breakdowns…. outhustled a lot…. unable to generate a lot of offense….yikes. We can't count on the goalie saving the team every game. The Canes better bring about ten times the intensity the rest of the way.

  3. The fact that they didn't play their A game and still won should tell you something. Great teams win even when they don't deserve to.

  4. Don't know if you go back and listen to these Adam, but your mic cuts out way too much in these videos. Might want to look into it
